Over 150 Economists Sign Letter Of Support For OWS

Recently Newt Gingrich publicly dismissed the Occupy Wall Street movement as being nothing but unemployed, uneducated rabble in need of a bath.

Of course, this flippant label makes no sense to anyone that has visited an OWS encampment, talked with its supporters, or even lightly researched the movement.

To further disprove the idea that only idiot socialists would identify with OWS, a group of top economists from around the world recently released a statement supporting the movement (see below).

“We are economists who oppose ideological cleansing in the economics profession. Equally we oppose political cleansing in the vital debate over the causes and consequences of our current economic crisis.

We support the efforts of the Occupy Wall Street movement across the country and across the globe to liberate the economy from the short-term greed of the rich and powerful “one percent”.

We oppose cynical and perverse attempts to misuse our police officers and public servants to expel advocates of the public good from our public spaces.

We extend our support to the vision of building an economy that works for the people, for the planet, and for the future, and we declare our solidarity with the Occupiers who are exercising our democratic right to demand economic and social justice.”

The statement has been signed by 170 economists so far and is still growing.

Trent, yes the word is used too loosely. It didn't start out that way but got added in for "sensationalizing". One would have to find the first source and chastise them for adding it.

The fact that this many "economists" could agree on anything is amazing, but then the subject is so obvious as to not require much economics savy to see the accelerating trend in wealth concentration while poverty grows.

I'm sure they will accept you to the list if your a degreed economist with certs. Then you too can be on the "top" by sensational journalist standards.

"Trent R., your qualifications please for this judgment?"

What she said===>
"I'm a top economist then - - My bachelor's degree is in economics. So there you go."
I'm also in NABE and AEA
Do I qualify? :)

The reason I came back to this article was I saw this===>

Seems like the term "Top Economists" is being used very loosely in the media
Kind of like a buzzword....

Diane O. Who pays you to post your satan inspired BS here?

What organization pays you to throw in your hate into civil discussions, calling people you know nothing about:

"dregs of society... rapist(s), thieves and those who have no respect for private property" and "liberals, fascists, anarchists" and "mob of rapists, thieves and people who commited suicide".........All of these hate filled quotes are from your posts and they certainly are only an example, not exhaustive.

You Diane O are a DC political whore and clearly do not live by Christ teachings. Don't defile Christ by claiming "religion" (episcopalian)...you clearly have no idea what Jesus taught. You may sit in a pew, but God knows your hardend heart.

Apparenty you are a political prostitute of the Tea Party in Washington DC, with one purpose...to give satans message of hate to the unsuspecting (and get paid to do so). I think of Judas when I think of you...ready to throw fellow citizens under the bus for personal gain. What a horrible mother you must be.

If all DO can do is lie, then she must not have any of that truth she claims to be bringing us.

I wonder if she will ever figure out that everyone here is smarter than she is.

Diane O. STOP DRINKING THE KOOL-AID.

I have been looking for gainful employment for the past 3 years, since the Wall Street induced crash. I am not lazy, stupid, nor gullible. I have also not received so much as one penny of unemployment, not for lack of application, either. It is idiots like you that make it that much harder for intelligent, conscientious employees, like I make every effort to be, that are denied work because of the short term "bottom line" of big companies that are willing to pay some half-assed kid less money to do the job wrong twice, than to spend the money to pay someone like me a little more to do the job right the first time.
Remember that the next time you get lousy customer service from some imbecile that is reading from a script in India or China; or when you have your home condemned because it has toxic Chinese drywall, or when you have to take your car back to be fixed twice because the mechanic that worked on it the first time was paid well below proper wage for your vehicular safety.
Complain about the police officers or fire department personnel that cannot come to your home because the city/county cannot keep enough of them on to do the job needed for your health and safety, since the "fine businessmen" that run the city want them to take cuts rather than taking those cuts themselves.
You have no clue about how the real world works or how the other half lives. Don't lie and say that you do, either. Your words put lie to any

Well, I disagree with you. As of last week the police have over 4,200 documented arrests...soon there won't be anyone left LOL! OWS protesters aren't going to influence Wall Street. I listen to the stock market channel eight hours a day and nothing that is going on with the OWS people has had any affect on the economy. Everyone is focused on the european issues meanwhile the protesters haven't accomplished anything. What is it they expect to accomplish anyway?

Seems to me they should be sending out their resumes to find a job and get off of extended unemployment benefits.

HAHAHAAHAHAHAAHAH as Daine sticks her head in the sand. Its not losing its momentum at all. It is going through a change but it no less influential.

Mack it all you want. it just going to get bigger and bigger and more powerful as time goes on.

7:58AM PST on Nov 27, 2011

No Diane OWS is not fading, it is gaining momentum.

The issue that is subject of the article has a list of 170 "economists" that support the OWS issues concerning growth of economic and wealth disparity. Your attack disputing that they are "leading economists" is irrelevent, because they, in an organization back the OWS movement. They are one of the many new citizen interest and political groups forming around the issues of OWS.

Running government on borrowed mnoney is not working, apparently we have some agreement on that fact. Then again you've been on the other side of that issue too, I think.

If you don't know it, your Wash. DC political job may be downsized. Perhaps your husband will loose his...you are in DC politics working aren't you, since Alexandria is connected to DC?

Are you paid to post on this Care2 site?

I want to know if you represent an organization or represent only yourself because the vile trash that comes from your mouth is not Godly.

Your discription of the OWS protesters saying;

"is disorganized and has attracted the dregs of society. They have attracted a rapist, thieves and those who have no respect for private property" ...is satan talk.

I Claim my Christianity solely for the wisdom of discrening trash and you just put forth an example of it...did you go to church in DC this morning?

6:18AM PST on Nov 27, 2011

It's good to see they are also supporting the movement. I know Robert Reich and Paul Krugman have voiced support for OWS as well but I didn't see their names on the list.

To the haters, OWS is a bit disorganized but coming together. That's how real grassroots movements are. The tea party was too organized to be real, with it's own corporate backers and it's own television network promoting it. It's really just a new name for the same core group of right-wing hate mongers. Many are STILL birthers, think Obama is a muslim plant or the anti-christ, all kind of non sense.

They've already had a large influence on the debate. We're talking about jobs being the first priority, about growing our way out of the recession. Prior to that it was all about cutting the deficit. If you cut first, you reduce growth and create a moving target in terms of the budget deficit. You cut the deficit but also slow growth, which increases the deficit so you have to cut more, slowing growth even more...

More jobs means higher GDP and tax revenue means lower deficits in the long run.
