OWS Protesters Charged With Felony For Mic-Checking Mayor

A few days ago, members of Occupy San Diego cleverly mic-checked Mayor Jerry Sanders during his State of the City address.

Now mic-checking, while intentionally disruptive, is an completely peaceful tactic that has been employed in a wide-variety of settings during the Occupy Wall Street movement.

The CEO of Wells Fargo, representatives of JP Morgan Chase, Newt Gingrich, and even President Obama have been targets of this practice. But not even President Obama responded with as much aggression and ignorance as the San Diego police officers in attendance (with full blessing of the Mayor).

Not content to simply escort the OWS protesters out of the venue, at least three were arrested and charged with felony conspiracy for their actions.

Watch the footage of the action below, then read the legal definition of felony conspiracy here, and tell me if you think the punishment fits the crime.

@Marjorie, Holly and Nancy --

This is a blog. The author is not a professional journalist. She is not being paid to write or post this story.

I assume you have ten fingers, two hands, and a brain. And since you are posting to the internet I can safely assume that you have a computer and internet access, which means you also have the capacity to look up information hand have it delivered to your computer screen in a nanosecond.

You want more information about the story? Copy the headline and paste it into a search box. This is what you get with a google search:

You want answers to your questions? Do your own research. Why demand that some poor blogger volunteering her time do what you are fully capable of doing yourself?

As for not knowing what a "mic check" is -- that simply reveals your lack of attention to news of the OWS movement. The "mic check" started when police in NY refused to allow protestors to use electronic audio equipment to amplify their voices. That happened, oh, way back last summer. The technique is a bit older than that, but it's been made popular and a standard elemen

Spread the protest.

Corporations have over-powered our government which now believes that out-sourcing and off-shoring of U.S. jobs is inevitable and necessary with expectations that the middle class should fall on their swords. It is the underlying cause of the financial collapse and borders on national security with the loss of our middle class tax base. Yet, this nation does nothing, not even demand it be restricted by whatever method. International businesses are doing the UN-AMERICAN activity of destroying U.S. salaries, U.S. businesses that hire in the U.S., and as an end result, destroying the U.S. marketplace while still demanding BUSINESS ENTITLEMENTS and protections for themselves.

Infrastructure spending and tax breaks will not replace enough jobs to keep up with the hemorrhaging loss of U.S. jobs from out-sourcing over seas. Neither party will do anything about it unless we begin grass roots efforts to protest out-sourcing and off-shoring of U.S. jobs. If nothing is done we will deserve what we get and it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

What the heck is mic checking?? Lousy article.

Michael MacDonald

why did the article say that "not even President Obama responded with as much aggression"

of course he wouldn't.
Civil disobedience is at the core of democratic values.
Whether it's used against us liberals or not,
no true liberal would ever charge someone for it.

Marjorie this is a blog not a newspaper. Most every article written here is a repeat of what is said in other news sources. As for your definition of Mic Check

The latest creative protest tactic arising form the Occupy protests is "mic check"ing politicians or fancy events, wherein protesers enter said events and interrupt speeches with rehearesed statements made through "the people's mic."

One person reads from prepare text and a large crow repeats it in unison. Making the citizen Mic louder than the speech giver.

Hey Beth, Take the time to research your article to reach more people. Explain what mic checking is. Tell us who was arrested. Did they passively resist arrest? Have the charges been dropped? Is OWS mounting any kind of organized defense? I am glad you are covering this, but get in there and really cover the story. (Unfortunately the professional journalists sure aren't doing it....)

Have there been any negative repercussions for Jerry Sanders? San Diego can be a bit wild west. Thanks for the info.
