OWS Protesters ‘Detain’ Sen. Carl Levin For Sponsoring NDAA

OWS Protesters ‘Detain’ Sen. Carl Levin For Sponsoring NDAA

Today, thousands of Occupy Wall Street protesters took to the streets of America’s capitol to protest corruption in the federal government, during an event they’re calling “Occupy Congress.”

Occupiers flocked to Washington, D.C. from all corners of the nation, and while many were taking action for the first time in their lives, there were a few familiar faces as well.

One such familiar face belonged to Sgt. Shamar Thomas, a former U.S. Marine who became an internet sensation when video of his diatribe against the New York Police Department’s violent treatment of OWS protesters went viral on YouTube.

On Tuesday, Sgt. Thomas joined forces with members of both Occupations in DC and Occupy Wall Street in a protest inside of Senator Carl Levin’s office today. In case you haven’t heard of Sen. Levin before, he’s the co-sponsor of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), a bill recently signed into law by President Obama.

As Adam Serwer, writing for MotherJones explains,

“The administration had said that the military detention provisions of an earlier version of the NDAA were “inconsistent with the fundamental American principle that our military does not patrol our streets. The revised NDAA is still inconsistent with that fundamental American principle. But the administration has decided that fundamental American principles aren’t actually worth vetoing the bill over.”

Watch what happened when Sgt. Thomas and OWS attempted to give Sen. Levin a taste of his own medicine:

Silent and peaceful is no longer valid..are the police silent and peaceful; will the troops taking you to the camp be silent and peaceful?

Why is the only presidential candidate I see speaking of NDAA and the need to repeal it Ron Paul? the rest will not even mention it. Both the parties seem to be one on this law we no longer have any rights except what they will allow for now(which means they are no longer rights at all)

Luvinia, it's not that I doubt your assertions, but I do have at least that much faith that that sort of thing would ONLY occur in the most extreme of circumstances.

I still have the hope that if that was to happen wholesale to U.S. citizens, that not only would the people not stand for it, but that the military would join us as they did in the Middle East.

I completely support the OWS, I do. It's just that that little play-group thing was juvenile at best, stupid at worst. We need to show our BEST works to get their attention.
Sorry to be the critic.

The ones we need to beware of are the Police!

Robert H...only if people continue to NOT VOTE or throw away their votes on a third party or radicals. I never use to be a one party person, but since GWB I have vowed to never vote for a Republican again and vote for every Democrat I can, the alternative is just to frightening. It amazes me that people can't see what's right before their eyes with the Republican Party; what they have caused thus far and what their radical right-wing intentions are. IF they don't wake up, your right; my hope is they will before it's too late.

They would have done better had it been a silent peaceful protest. These tactics just make them look like left-wing radicals. Sad they could accomplish much more using different tactics.

It appears that OWS has begun to shake up things in New York, Washington and the rest of the nation.

In the past, the Department of Homeland Security passed out nearly $800.000 USD in an effort to dismantle OWS, didn't work, did it.

The Neo-Cons favorite "news" channel, the Fox Fascist News has tried to dismantle OWS, it only served to make us stronger. It hasn't worked, has it.

The Washington-based lobbyist firm Clark Lytle Geduldig Cranford offered to provide a response to the Occupy Wall Street protests for the American Bankers Association for the sum of $850,000 USD.
