Although Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning looks like lock for the GOP nomination to run for retiring Sen. Ben Nelson’s seat. But lock or not, he’s not getting it without a fight. And now, former Vice Presidential pick Sarah Palin is weighing in and endorsing his opponent.
According to Roll Call, Palin is backing state legislator Deb Fischer, with a little last minute money and a bit of lip service. “We are happy to support you and have asked SarahPAC to send a financial contribution to your campaign. Good luck next Tuesday — the Palins are in your corner.”
Fischer had requested help long ago, and it’s not clear exactly how much effect a Sarah Palin email will have with less than a week before the primary. Bruning has already been declared the early favorite, and with state Treasurer Don Stenberg being backed by both Sen. Jim DeMint and Club for growth, it seems like Fischer’s new endorsement is less likely to help her than to continue dividing the Tea Party vote and ensure Bruning’s nomination.
Republicans will vote for their favorite candidate next Tuesday. Meanwhile, former Nebraska Senator John Kerrey will be running as the Democratic nominee.
