Brittney Griner

Brittney Griner, a three-time All-American center at Baylor, confirmed she is indeed a lesbian in an interview with Sports Illustrated.com in April. While having never hid the fact, this was the first time she had spoken to the press about her sexuality.

“It really wasn’t too difficult, I wouldn’t say I was hiding or anything like that. I’ve always been open about who I am and my sexuality. So, it wasn’t hard at all. If I can show that I’m out and I’m fine and everything’s OK, then hopefully the younger generation will definitely feel the same way.”

Griner has since broken records and continues to be an outspoken advocate for LGBT sports awareness.

And there you have it, our list of just some of the famous faces that came out in 2013. This is not meant to be an exhaustive list by any means, but we hope that in 2014 we see many more people opening up about their personal identities and providing examples for young LGBTs of how you can be successful and accomplished in your field while being true to yourself.

Here’s to 2014!

Susan T, your relationship isn't getting media attention because neither of you are celebrities nor are you media worthy, NOT because you are straight. You sound like you might be jealous because you're not married even though you've been with the same man for 14 years while other people, even gay people, are.

Why can we not be happy for people who are great people no matter who they are in a relationship with?
no one is giving me media attention for being in a relationship with my bf for 14 years.
I think the gay thing has run it's course, meaning OK you're accepted you are no longer any more special than I am. be human and carry on.

Hate that someone's sexuality matters. That said, the more folks who do come out, folks who have celebrity, the less likely there will be continued stigma. A girl can hope, right?

Kudos to them.

Awesome! ^^ More people need to come out. And homophobes need to STFU and evolve. One day, there will be no more need to come out because it'll be normal and no more an issue to be gay. Can't wait! ^^

This "coming out" is odd to me ? Be what you are all the time.

I'm not sure Chelsea Manning's story qualifies as "coming out" in the traditional sense. I don't see that she's ever said she's gay, just transgender. A detail to be sure but still important.
As for the privacy issue, celebrities "coming out" is something that needs to happen at this point in our history. As long as people are being bullied simply for who they are it is necessary for others to stand up for them by showing publicly that many folks are gay and loved and successful.

Thanks, VERY happy for them, and for everyone who has been "stronger" by this :)
Love is love - and everyone should keep their head up and be able to be who they are :)
