Petraeus: Burning Qurans Will Endanger American Troops

The Florida church that made waves last month by declaring it would burn copies of the Quran on the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks is still planning their bonfire.  And now, it’s becoming a matter of national security.

General David Petraeus has announced publicly that not only will the spectacle be an embarrassment to the church and its supporters, it could endanger our combat troops in foreign lands, too.

Via The Telegraph:

The US military commander in Afghanistan has warned that the lives of American troops will be endangered if evangelical Christians in Florida go ahead with plans to burn the Koran on Saturday’s ninth anniversary of September 11.

Gen Petraeus said that burning Islam’s holy book would be a propaganda coup for the Taliban in Afghanistan and stoke anti-US sentiment across the Muslim world.

“It could endanger troops and it could endanger the overall effort in Afghanistan,” he said.

“It is precisely the kind of action the Taliban uses and could cause significant problems. Not just here but everywhere in the world we are engaged with the Islamic community.”

And in case anyone believed the General was exaggerating, he admitted that just the rumor of the potential action has already stirred unrest.  But will the church respond and drop their media stunt?

From CBC News:

Dove World Outreach Center senior pastor Terry Jones said he knew burning the Qur’an would be considered offensive, and he said the church considered Petraeus’s words “very, very serious.”

“We are definitely weighing the situation,” Jones said. “We are weighing the thing that we are about to do, what it could possibly cause, what is our actual message, what are we trying to get across. It’s very, very important that America wakes up.”

Will the church give up on what has been a very successful media campaign for them so far?  And if they do, would another anti-Muslim extremist group try to do the same?

This ridiculous so-called American, Christian is all about his Own Glory and Nothing when it comes to religious belief and responsibility. Since when does a "man of the cloth" endanger not only the troops, but his congregation, and Americans everywhere? Anyone that would put his own standing/importance above human lives the world over is a megalomaniac who desperately needs his head examined far from the spotlight that he is so eager to be in. This fellow is no example of the United States or Christian values. Pitiful.

At http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/2317074 is one answer to the question I am stating up front that i am uninformed-but why would any woman willingly become a muslim?

You might also be interested to look @ http://www.answerbag.com/a_view/5258280 for an answer to the question Why would anyone embrace Islam when it has such a strong negative image?

Helen: " I never see the women pray with their men are they seperated from the men and it so why? Are the women treated differently than the men and if so why? I want my why's answered...."

The answer to both questions is YES! But that is only the very beginning. You have an awful lot to learn, Helen.

Helen A>>> What is stopping you from learning more about Islam? Use a good neutral source, online or at the library. While you are at it, you might want to also explore Orthodox Judaism and the many various denominations of Christianity and learn about their attitudes and treatment of women and compare them to Islam. You will find many similarities.

This pastor Jones is a complete attention whore just like Rev. Phelps. They want attention and this is the only way they can get it. If the media would agree to completely ignore them, they would go away.....

Never happen, though.

Every cloud has a silver lining they say and this very dark cloud has one. In this lining is a sort of evidence of what Muslims have been saying all along that they have nothing to do with the outrage of the few and it is the wide media coverage that has given the impression that all Muslims are in it. The shoe is now on the other foot and all decent God-loving Christians are at pains to point out that the church planning to burn copies of the Qur'an is a small insignificant group not representative of the vast body of Christianity.

Hitler and Stalin burned books, and this preacher seems a little unbalanced anyway.
