Poland’s Dash for Gas

The ‘dash for gas’ has gone East and the fracking multinationals have moved in to secure the sizable shale deposits lying deep in Poland’s underbelly. Advocates say this will bring prosperity and jobs, but opponents cite the US experience — where fracking has been marred by environmental and social concerns — and fear it could be the final nail in the coffin for Poland’s traditional rural communities.

Are we really so desperate that we can sacrifice our homeland for profit ( and a few jobs for the well connected)? If it was a matter of life and death, one could understand. But out of greed ...?

This is so very disappointing and depressing for me. (And, btw, I love you, Jane H., for your comment!) As a first-generation American of Polish descent, I feel a strong link to that country, and one of the highlights of my entire life came a couple of summers ago, when I was able to take my son there. The countryside there is charming and gorgeous ~ I wish I could share some of my pictures with you. (In addition, but probably not as important in this debate, certain vistas reminded me of my mother telling me about those very things: the little clouds in a bright blue sky, fields bordered by forests, white lace curtains in the windows of villagers' dark-wood homes.) I hope the Poles realize just how special their land is and rally to take care of it. ♡♡

Poland is such a beautiful country---I hope it is not ruined. Why doesn't somebody decide about fracking one way or another--we need the scientists to declare it safe or unsafe. I love Poland and its people!

Poland cannot handle the problems that fracking causes. Hopefully this is stopped before it happens.
