"In the aftermath of 9/11/01, strong measure were needed for a for a time to protect our country against those who wished to destroy us. REMEMBER THAT TERRIBLE DAY!! "
I disagree. At no time was it necessary or constitutional to violate the privacy rights of the American people.
Plus our response to the attacks on NY, DC and the passengers of the flight that crashed in rural PA was no doubt an al-Qaeda wet dream. We over-reacted, in spades.
Our airline security did no fail on 9/11 (no guns made it on the plane). Our policy did fail (box cutters are more lethal than previously thought).
We should have done is: a) added box cutters to the banned items list; b) not fired innocent and experienced airport security staff in lieu of a new bloated bureaucracy to wand granny while we sweat that our shapoo bottle may be an ounce too big; an c) pursued Osama bin Laden, et al, and brought them to American justice.
But at no time was it right to violate the US Constitution, which protects us and has protected the liberties and general welfare of the American People more than any single entity.
As for your "last thing." I agree completely. When will we judge policy on its merit rather than whose idea it was?? When we do, only good policy (popular, which is "good" by democracy standards) will advance, regardless of the party in the majority.
I'm pretty sure that's what The Framers were thinking while jotting down the Constitution.

I'm sorry but I'd like to say one last thing. People are blaming this political group and that political group. Can we forget all of this B.S., become AMERICANS, and work together to become stronger? Democrats or Republicans matter not. Forget the blame and become one, Please!! AMERICANS. Citizens of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!
Thank you

In the aftermath of 9/11/01, strong measure were needed for a for a time to protect our country against those who wished to destroy us. REMEMBER THAT TERRIBLE DAY!! We no longer need those measures to be in place. NOT all of them. Some should remain!! Abuse of government power is out of control everywhere we look. Boundries are being stepped over as if they don't exist. We as citizens must reign in the excess powers we gave our government and protect ourselves. PROTECT OURSELVES. That is frightning to say or think. To worry that our government could or would take away our very freedoms that we hold dear and many have fought and died to protect. Big Brother is Watching. I might get a visit just for this posting. We must protect this country from ALL of those who wish to destroy it. Regardless of where they are located. Washington DC or in another country. Protect our President, our Country, Yourselves, and Your Loved Ones.

in 1997, a friend and i asked what we would do if we were the rightwing shadow government to get the wish list it read like the script for 911. 2 years later the american enterprise institute (in 2000, bush said that "after the bible, the AEI is my biggest influence") published its PNAC, project for the new american century." the PNAC included such lines as "what is needed is an event like pearl harbor... to galvanize the public behind wars we deem necessary." but despite the scores of extremely suspicious elements of the official story on 911... folks like us are ridiculed as 'paranoid conspiracy theorists.' wars, torture, surveillance, destruction of what little remained of the bill of rights and obama becomes the obamabush, oh boy.
the 'patriot act' was presented to congress at the exact time when the anthrax scare was hitting congressional offices. the document was going to their offices when they weren't evenalowed into them. the 730 page bill was unread by virtually all of congress when they voted for it! the patriot act was itself treasonous but a congress of bleating sheep didn't care and as with most of the bush bills, it passed senate 96-4. you can probably guess who voted against it...
like my grandpa used to say, when something stinks like rotten fish, there may be a couple of safe bites left, but don't risk it - throw the whole damn thing out!

The Patriot Act is less about patriotism than oppression.
For centuries, totalitarian governments have gained and retained power by frightening the population into giving up their civil and humann rights.
Sadly, we allowed that to happen under George Bush. A hard-core inner government circle, headed by Dick Cheney, employed the age-old tactics used so effectively by Nazi Germany, Fascist Italy, Communist Russia, and countless Banana Republics in the Caribbean, Philipines and South America.
The Patriot Act controls Americans not terrorists.

Karla,I only wish you were right, but when 'Wana be king'Bush illegaly suspended writ of habeas corpus the entire Bill of Rights was made null and void.American citizens without the right to hold the government accountable in any court, are Americans with no civil rights or liberties as none can be enforced,
Margaret, the Obama admin. is trapped by Bush/Republican controlled Congress law establishing the Police State of America and giving the American Stasi unprecidented,un-costitutional powers, the Patriot Act.Unlike you I prefer to live in the land of the Free, from Big Brother's secret arrests and detentions on secret information,Home of the Brave, with legal recourse to challange governmental abuse of power and userpation of rights and freedom.
Corey, civil rights are not gender/race specific.Rather it is the denial, revocation or unequal application of all or part of the Bill of Rights or laws to any or all American citizens and the denial of the absolute First Amendment right to demand 'a redress of grievances' from the US government in a court of law.
Abbe, you do know that the Republicans,in the Whitehouse and as maiority in Congress, who wrote, passed and signed the Partiot Act are no longer in power they lost the last election, remember 2008? And you do realize that civil rights applied to only an individual or group are the privileges of the elite, the aristocracy the very thing the Declaration of Independence and US Constitution were created to abolish and prevent!
