Porn Star Challenges Stigma Against Breastfeeding

Porn Star Challenges Stigma Against Breastfeeding

Madison Young is best known as an adult actress and self-identified feminist pornographer.  But despite her profession, which is of course quite controversial, she is receiving kudos from the breastfeeding community for her efforts to explore the stigma against being both a mother and a sexual person.

Young’s exhibit “includes a baby quilt made of a juxtaposing combination of burp clothes & porn star panties, onesies printed with erotic photographs featuring Young, video and photo works melding images 60′s iconic mother Jackie Kennedy and iconic slut Marilyn Monroe into a single entity and much more.”  She also held a health awareness event, where she nursed live and in-person while presenters discussed breast health and safer sex.

Surprisingly, her criticism came not from conservatives, but from a fellow sex worker.  On Twitter, Furry Girl (presumably a pseudonym) lambasted Young for exposing her son to the type of people who would want to see a porn star breastfeed: “It’s funny to see how many feminist kinksters don’t think consent matters when it comes to creating erotic art w/ a baby.”

Most seem to be siding with Young, who tweeted back: “The only one sexualizing this image of me breastfeeding is you. Which makes me feel truly disgusted and violated”.  On Salon, Tracy Clark-Flory writes that the controversy actually illustrates Young’s point far better than her art exhibit.

“The idea that there is something inherently prurient about a porn star breast-feeding plays right into that classic either-or thinking: Her breasts are erotic in one venue, so they can’t be wholesome in another,” she writes. “It’s a wonder anyone lets her breast-feed at all!”

On “The Stir,” Jacqueline Bart launches into an even more impassioned defense of Young, claiming that she should be held up as a role model.  ”Are we so tormented by trying to reconcile the co-existence of our own sexual/maternal natures that we have to demonize the same duality in other women?” she writes.  ”Madison Young should be admired and supported for her bravery.”

What do you think?  Is Madison Young’s open support for breastfeeding a courageous or inappropriate act?

One thing we can agree on is Madison Young gets press, and she's getting it for mothers' rights to feed their youngsters in public.

How is being a porn star so very controversial nowadays? Porn is so pervasive in our culture, what with the internet, legal brothels, reality TV, strip clubs, etc., you'd think we'd be desensitized already. One of the best mothers I know was a dancer and an escort her whole adult life, and she made a better living than I ever will. Maybe we make too much of the dichotomy between sinner and saint in the female archetype.

iconic slut Marilyn Monroe ? Wow! Since when does looking for love in all the wrong places make a person a slut? Breast Milk is Best doesn't matter what the person does for a living as long as mother and child are healthy!

Personally,I don't hold anyones job against them but,if you want to be taken seriously,A job as she has can only belittle her efforts...she also needs to use voice and language wisely-speaking only of things pertaining to the subject at hand and NOT about people she did not know or even share this earth with ....Just some tips.

No. She is doing what nature intended women to do. She is fortunate. Some women are unable to nurse and know that they are missing something beautiful. The picture is not erotic. It is beautiful.

isn't that what tits are all about? I mean, that's why they are stuck on our chests, to feed those little monsters. Somehow I think that would get first billing...

CALL FOR AN EDIT: Marilyn Monroe as an iconic slut? That is more than a bit much. it's offensive. I can't believe I am seeing that written here.

It's kind of a shame that it's a porn star doing this, as it "proves" to those idiots against public breastfeeding (who in reality are themselves the ones sexualising it) that it is a sexual thing. But it is something that needed to be done. Besides, everyone like boobies. Why? It's not a dirty thing. We all have a fondness for them due to our attachment to our mothers when we were young. For men and women alike, they symbolise nurture. Part of their sexual attraction is the biological and emotional need for nurture that is hard-wired in to each of us. Played out in an intimate setting it enhances the intimacy between a couple. That's not dirty... let's stop being so prudish and get real. Think of the cultures where it's so hot clothing didn't really develop much... these women go around topless all the time and no-one gives them a second look! It'd be nice if breastfeeding once again became so second nature to society that no-one even notices anymore, except maybe to say "awwww :-)"!
