Puppy Nailed to Railroad Track Gets New Paw

Puppy Nailed to Railroad Track Gets New Paw

Things are looking up for a puppy who was found mutilated in Albany, New York: he is getting a new paw.

It appears that someone nailed him and two other three-week-old pit bull puppies to railroad tracks by their left back paws, but they got loose and were found and rescued, according to Pet-Abuse.com.

All three dogs were treated for infected wounds, malnutrition and dehydration. One of them, Pearl, is missing two toes. Another, the smallest pup, didn’t survive.

The third puppy, Hudson, is missing part of his paw, which may have been sawed off, Pet-Abuse.com states. But now he has got himself a custom-made prosthesis, courtesy of Dr. Tom Bowersox at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society and many compassionate donors.

Hudson whined a bit during the fitting but then quickly adjusted to the prosthesis, “strutting around his pen with his sister, playing tug of war and sitting for a treat,” The Times Union reported.

Raw Story wrote that Dr. Bowersox said, “I can’t believe it. He’s walking on it, he’s sitting on it. I guess what amazes me most is that he hasn’t chewed on it yet.”

The prosthesis is “like a softly lined, flexible cast that snugly slides right over the dog’s stump. There are no toes; just a waterproof rubber sole with bumpy treads for grip. It’s hard on the outside.” Before putting it on, the vet slipped a sock onto Hudson’s leg. Watch a video of the procedure here:

The prosthesis is adjustable, but as Hudson gets bigger he will need two more to grow into. A prosthetic maker in Canada gave the Humane Society a deal on the price and is charging only for the first and last of the three devices. Donations to the Humane Society are paying for the treatment, which Bowersox said “costs just slightly more than it would if Hudson’s entire leg were amputated instead,” while sparing him a life of walking unevenly on his legs and wearing down his joints.

The police do not have a suspect in this case. “We’re still concerned because there’s a scary person out there. The person who did this not only is likely to harm other animals but is very likely to harm people,” Brad Shear, Executive Director at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, told Newschannel 13. There is a $7,000 reward “for information leading to an arrest and conviction.” If you have information, please call the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society at 518-434-8128.

But don’t call about adopting Hudson and Pearl — they will soon be spoken for. So many people wanted to adopt them that the Humane Society held an essay contest, with entries due at midnight on November 12th. These puppies will be with new families in no time.

I'm so happy that Hudson and Pearl were rescued, and seeing Hudson sit and walk made me smile. Why such wonderful animals suffered such abuse is beyond me.

This evil blood thirsty person will obviously crave for more blood baths down the road. Get him out of the society ASAP before he brutalizes many more innocent animals and no doubt in my mind there he will target and pray humans too. He is a sick minded phychopath.

Thank you all for saving these puppies and to all the humane people everywhere.

To those inbred aliens from Uranus that tried to kill these beautiful puppies I have a perfect punishment: We will take away all your little devices; cellphones, cameras, PCs, iPhons/Pads/Pods, flat screeen TVs, players, any electronic devices you have and you will not be allowed to come within 1,000 feet near any of them. You will also be stripped of your citizenship, deported to Arctica (less people there) and the people that raised you will spend any money they earn on helping groups that take care of abandoned and abused animals!
