Rand Paul Demands Vote On Fetal Personhood Before Flood Relief

It’s the start of hurricane season on the east coast, which makes it a perfect time for Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) to play abortion politics with federal flood relief dollars.

The faux-bertarian Senator moved this week to hold a bi-partisan flood insurance bill hostage until the Senate considers Paul’s unrelated “fetal personhood” measure which would give legal protections to fetuses from the moment of fertilization. Paul tacked the fetal personhood bill as an amendment to a bill that would bolder the National Flood Insurance Program. The bill had been expected to pass easily until Paul gummed up the works.

“I’m told last night that one of our Republican senators wants to offer an amendment — listen to this one — wants to offer an amendment on when life begins,” Reid said on the Senate floor Tuesday. “I am not going to put up with that on flood insurance. I can be condemned by outside sources; my friends can say, ‘Let them have a vote on it.’ There will not be a vote on that on flood insurance. We’ll either do flood insurance with the amendments that deal with flood insurance, or we won’t do it. We’ll have an extension.”

Paul has been out front in his crusade to criminalize pregnancy by granting legal rights to fetuses, so this move should come as little surprise. Besides, its not like the Paul brand of libertarianism embraces an expansive view of liberty–just the kind available to the white christian men of this country.

Key word running through today's articles is PERSONHOOD. And yes, each of those in power positions hold as hostage other points of view as long and as hard as they can. How come we only hear about Rand Paul?

A collection of cells that cannot survive on it's own outside the dead body of it's mother is **NOT** a person and does not have rights until it can breathe on it's own. If you are willing to let the mother die shut up about your "right to life" bull. Living people who have lost their homes and businesses are suffering right now and need help NOW not when your pet project is completed. That is blackmail pure and simple.

Is Rand Paul a real person? I'd like him (it) to prove it.

Crazy stuff---the article and the comments!! To put what MAY become a person in front of so many who already are is sad...scary even....

Perhaps instead of Rand Paul we need to put Ru Paul in office?

Use contraceptives? That the perfect solution -- though I think they should be covered like Obama wants. Doesn't matter how cheap there are people too poor to feed themselves -- making them the very people who would want access -- to afford contraceptives.

But if the GOP gets in their plan is not only ban abortions, but contraceptives too. Tell me how that makes sense? No contraceptives, no abortions and social assistant programs set up to help mothers and children cut to the bone or gotten rid of all together.

And Milan, fetuses are not people. A group of cells is not a person. You twist science around to suit your own personal beliefs. Fine, do that for yourself but I am sick and tired of people like you who think they control my body. NO YOU DON'T.

If you don't want a baby then use birth control and make the man put a blanket on it. Birth control pills and condoms are not expensive.

I will stick my neck out once more just for a moment and for the last time in this free-for-all. LD. B. - I didn't use the word “Person”. Neither did I refer to “U.S. Citizen” nor any other Semantic Ammunition. I restrict my argument to “Human and Alive”. I see the sanctity of Human Life once again under attack. Come back to me, when you are ready to deny those two simple claims I make for the poor helpless human foetus, whose very survival right is under attack. I believe the cause is our - very human - reluctance to accept responsibility for our actions, when it involves a certain amount of effort or sacrifice.
