This week’s special feature from The Great Animal Rescue Chase honors an Idaho woman’s extraordinary devotion to shelter dogs. Jeramie is a one-woman adoption machine who enjoys an especially powerful bond with a dog named Holly who lives with an untamed heart and a tail that wags like the wind.
Holly was a feral bull terrier who had never had a home and was burned badly on her back from crawling under a steam pipe last Thanksgiving when the temperature fell to minus 15. She was taken to the Minidoka Shelter in Paul, Idaho.
I have been rescuing and finding homes for as many dogs as possible from this shelter, though it is almost 300 miles round trip for me each time I go. I have spayed/neutered, vaccinated, gotten hip surgery, bought as many cages and beds as dogs and given away and rescued 225 dogs to date since last June.
Her Eye Was Swollen and No One Wanted Her
Holly was a different story. She sat in an upper cage looking so quiet and soulful and would always put her paw up to hold my hand. I was hoping a pitbull rescue out of Boise would save her, but one day when I was there taking two litters of puppies home, I was told that because Holly’s eye was all swollen and no one wanted her, her time was up. I immediately took her and knew that she would be joining the other four dogs at my house that were not going to be very adoptable.
She has rewarded me with total enthusiasm and loyalty, plus chewed up my whole Jeep, including pulling and chewing up all the electrical in the back window. She eats books, chews on all my clothes, refuses to stop jumping on me…but she has gained weight and found safety. Not easy having two rescued female pit bulls since I am 62 years old and alone, but all five of my rescues are my life.
Holly’s New Brothers & Sisters
My beagle came all the way from Kentucky to finally find a furever home in Idaho. Brandy, my blue-eyed pit bull, is a refugee from Denver, Colorado. Bear was going to be shot in Shoshone, so this lab/chow has joined the mix. The fifth dog is from my own county’s no-kill shelter and is a lab/chesapeake who is now 12 years old and was only 9 months when I got him. I cook for my dogs, they sleep on my king bed and basically are with me 24/7. See more photos of Holly here.

Thank you for all your efforts, Jeramie. Buddhist philosophy says that our efforts are never wasted. My latest rescue is Franklin, a cat that was up for adoption at the pet store for 6 months. He found his forever home at my house, and never fails to appreciate it!
this story made my day thx.
This as the other story I´ve just read on care2 about a kitty helping heal a man with cancer, are shocking stories, But always animals teach us a lot, much more than we do with them
They are wise creatures , they don´t need intelligence and material stuff to be worthy to be loved, to be respected and considered
Mother Earth and its creatures always does give Humanity Much more than we do to them: their lifes in sacrifice, their suffering and pain . They have risked their lifes for us, they have given us food, shelter, comfort and so many things through their sacrificies and lifes. What else does Humanity need to see the reality, the great love of our Masters, our real friends, the Animals?
Animals is not the right word for them it should be another one with a greater meaning to their great value
Humans aren´t deserving this word so many often
The so bad called Human, the so bad called Animals, but the great difference among creatures: The ones loving the others no matter their status, fame, sex, money
They others, the Humans do considering those stuff so often to choose their priorities, their relationships, their way of living and companions
thanks for this story!
Jeramie, you are an incredible woman. Thanks for everything you have done and continue to do for animals
You are a human after my own heart!
It seems to me that Jeramie, is a dog whisperer herself. May the creator bless you all the days of your life. We rescued a 3 & 1/2 yr old shiba innu. She had 2 homes before she came to life with us. She was never abused. Just neglected, we've had her for 5 months now, she is so loving. She didnt even know the word walk. She never had toys before, my daughter buys her everything, because she is soooo happy when she gets things. I've read that shiba's can get obessed with toys. Our lil haruki is so enjoying her forever home. I'm so happy that we adopted her. It was from reading articles on here, that made me open to getting an older dog, instead of a puppy.
God bless you for taking care of his beloved four legged children. It is not a easy job and not a cheap one either. I agree about the puppy thing, that is why these mills need to be stopped.
Thank you, everyone for the kind things you have all said. I actually brought home a new foster today who had been chained his whole brief life, starved and beaten. I am calling him Bongo and fortunately, the rest of the pack have accepted him. Wish Cesar Milan would come here. Guess he would tell me to kick them all off the bed, but I love sleeping with them. Please rescue a dog, don't buy a puppy ever. There are so many adorable puppies out there facing euthanasia every day. I always ask people what kind of dog they want and tell them to be patient because I will find them their dog and it works. Some of my long term fosters have found homes. Hardest thing is loving them, training them, housebreaking them, etc. and then letting them go, but that is part of the deal. Otherwise I am a hoarder. When God let me turn 60 2 years ago, I promised to dedicate the rest of my life to all animals. I love Care2. I do the clicks every day, sign petitions, plant trees with my points, vote Pepsi Refresh Project in Canada and America and always vote for spay/neuter programs or no kill shelters. Today I had a break thru with a large food chain. They donated dog food to me last week that had come from broken bags. I gave it to a local rescue and asked them to please call me anytime for any food, I would deliver it where it is needed. They called today with a huge amount of organic baby spinach, romaine, and club salads. I was able to stock our local food pantry, and other counties. Best recycl
