Reykjavik Mayor Jon Gnarr chose Saturday’s Pride events in the area to ride through the streets of the Icelandic capital in a bright pink dress to protest the way Russian punk outfit Pussy Riot has been treated at the hands of Russian authorities.
A thirteen second clip of Gnarr shows the mayor in Pussy Riot-like balaclava and dress aboard a vehicle with a sign saying “Free Pussy Riot” on the side as the band’s song “Clear the Cobblestones” blasts out into the streets. Watch below:
Gnarr, 45, previously enjoyed a career as an actor and comedian, and clearly has a good sense of what makes for a powerful political statement. Photos of Gnarr putting the “final touch” to his outfit, complete with very fetching make-up, are available on his Facebook page.
As Care2 writer Kristina Chew reported earlier, Russian prosecutors have asked for a sentence of three years for the three women, citing provisions that are designed to combat “hooliganism” after the women staged an impromptu performance of one of their songs criticizing President Vladimir Putin in Moscow’s Cathedral of Christ the Savior last December.
The women were held in pre-trial detention for almost six months before their case came before the court, something that has been of deep concern to human rights groups.
Given that an acquittal is virtually unheard of in cases like this, a three year sentence seems almost assured. However, other members of the Pussy Riot collective have vowed to carry on with their protests to combat what they see as aggressive attacks on freedom of speech.
International support has come from many sources, including pop icon Madonna, who recently staged concerts in Russia, and singer Bjork who invited Pussy Riot members on stage with her to amplify their message, and said in a recent statement, “As a musician and a mother I would like to express I fiercely dont agree with them being put to jail because of their peaceful protest performance.”

+ add your ownDown with Putin!!!
Putin is just like Hitler... a small minded fascist. You can't kill the thirst for freedom. At some point the serfs rise up and kill the oppressors. And before we in the US get all smug....how many Arab men who were rounded up after 9/11 are still missing?
Now even Iceland has joined the movement to criticize Vlad Putin regarding his pussy problem.
Did you actually see the video of Pussy Riot in the Cathedral?
I think if the SAME THING happened in one of OUR Cathedrals, say while a service was going on, say interrupting a Catholic Mass in St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City --
OUR Police wouldn't be gentle with these women;
OUR right-wing media would be HOWLING FOR THEIR SCALPS, calling them "TERRORISTS", most probably......
Rush Limbaugh and the Christian Right would be all for locking them up and throwing away the key, if not for the death penalty for "blaspheming Christianity"...
OUR FBI {our "Secret Police" or "Homeland Security"} would be RAIDING THEIR FRIENDS' HOMES looking for bombs, balaclavas, subversive literature and such....
We don't need to feel we're any bit "superior" to the Russians...
Of course, in OUR case it would be "justified" for our cops to act like that, after all, America has "done no wrong", at all, anywhere, ever......
Question: WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF OUR NOVEMBER ELECTIONS GET STOLEN BY THE RETHUGS? {again}. WILL WE HAVE OUR OWN VERSION OF PUSSY RIOT, THEN?????
Thanks Steve for the article and video clip. I certainly hope that the international pressure has some effect on the trial. Kudos to the Mayor and the organizers of the Pride Event.
Russian people want/ need freedom too.
Devon seems like a geeat man!
This mayor is pretty darn brave for going against the Russian establishment. I hope they free these girls.
Wonderful! Agree with devon I. It would be nice to send him a thank you.
dictators and insecure men rarely back down on anything they chose to do. It's a sign of weakness (to them) and that their grip on control is losening among their minions. The image of Mussolini hanging on meat hooks, Saddam's body being pummeled is too far a leap for them to think "that could be me" or "that will be me".
Fortunately, human life doesn't go on forever, to the relief of those who live long enough to celebrate the death of the bully.
