Yesterday on his radio show, Rush Limbaugh claimed that accused gunman Jared Lee Loughner has the ‘full support’ of Democrats and joked that Democrats had something to do with the Tucson shooting in which Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Arizona) was targeted.
CBS News also reports that Limbaugh said the Democratic Party ‘seeks to profit out of murder’ and that the political left ‘openly wishes for such disaster in order to profit from it.’ A transcript of the program posted to Limbaugh’s website does not include those comments.
Limbaugh also bemoans the criticism of Sarah Palin in the aftermath of the shootings as “insane” and asks if Loughner’s parents are “derelicts” or “did they just draw an unlucky card, get a kid born with mental issues?” Limbaugh repeatedly mentions Lougher’s alleged use of marijuana, saying that “mental health issues like this [are] often caused by drug use.” More commentary on Limbaugh’s comments at Roll Call.
Limbaugh made his comments two days after Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik criticized the media for spreading “vitriolic rhetoric” that he believed led to Saturday’s tragedy. At least in the short run, the tragedy in Tucson is leading not to more civility in our national political discourse, but—with commentary like this from Limbaugh and Sarah Palin accusing journalists of ‘blood libel‘—I’d say we have taken several, several steps backwards.
