Santorum: Adopting Children Is A ‘Privilege’ That Gay People Aren’t Entitled To

Santorum: Adopting Children Is A ‘Privilege’ That Gay People Aren’t Entitled To

During an appearance before the FAMiLY Leader yesterday morning, potential presidential candidate and former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum (R) argued that children who are raised in a household with two heterosexual parents were typically better off than those raised in single households or by gay people. “Sure single parenthood will get you there most of the time,” he admitted, “but it just isn’t as good. It just isn’t as good as having a mom and a dad.” Santorum said that parenting was a “privilege” that some people — especially gay people — were not entitled to:

SANTORUM: Can you have good stock, solid family with a single parent? Yes you can … if you were getting on an airplane and you had a choice between two of them and one airplane would get you there 95 percent of the time and the other plane would get you there 85 percent of the time. What plane would you take?

[...]

A lesbian woman came up to me and said, ‘why are you denying me my right?’ I said, ‘well, because it’s not a right.’ It’s a privilege that society recognizes because society sees intrinsic value to that relationship over any other relationship.

Despite Santorum’s assertions, research suggests that two loving gay parents are actually better for children than a single parent. “Scholars, at USC and New York University, looked at a range of existing studies, including research on gay and lesbian parents, finding that it’s ideal if a child is raised by two parents who are ‘responsible, committed, stable,’ but that the gender doesn’t cause radical differences.” As sociologist Timothy Biblarz of the USC College of Letters, Arts and Sciences points out:

Significant policy decisions have been swayed by the misconception across party lines that children need both a mother and a father. Yet, there is almost no social science research to support this claim. One problem is that proponents of this view routinely ignore research on same-gender parents. The bottom line is that the science shows that children raised by two same-gender parents do as well on average as children raised by two different-gender parents. This is obviously inconsistent with the widespread claim that children must be raised by a mother and a father to do well.

During a press availability following the speech, Santorum grew agitated when pressed by the Iowa Independent’s Lynda Waddington on why he was so hard on single parents. “The data says society and children are better when we have stable families and stable marriages,” he said. He did not extend the same logic to gay couples, however, saying, “I think children need mothers and fathers.” Watch that exchange here.

I am convinced that some people should not have kids because they have only misery and hell to impart to potential offspring. Profiling is widespread these days and I am sure there exist indicators or a profile that could lead to information as to the mental health of the prospective parents, prior to conception.
The world is full of people who were tormented as children by sick and inadequate parents. Many are damaged throughout their lives by childhood trauma. Should they decide to have offspring, they virtually assure the continuation of the misery , since humans "go with what they know", unless the pain they experience forces them to seek out help and new insights that would inhibit the behavioral patterns of their understanding.
The out right banning of gays to adopt is asinine but seems perfectly normal for homophobes like 'santorum.

Parenthood is a privilege. It's a privilege that everyone deserves to know and to feel, regardless of sexual identity or race or religion, etc as long as they are able to care for the child and will be good to the child. Some children will never know a kind word because there are so many laws against certain people not being able to adopt. We live in sad times, and I don't see the point in turning away good people just because we can't get over our prejudices.

It may take a male and female to make a baby, but that doesn't mean they are good parens. Too many men are fathers in name only leaving the woman as a single parent or even visa versa leaving the man as a single parent.

Santorum is ignorant and biased on this issue.
There should be equal treatment under the law for all who want to adopt or to foster a chile.
While some people want to adopt or to foster a child or children for the wrong reasons that isn't exclusive to gays.

What a bigoted, sanctimonious, ignorant (probably bible bashing) overprivilaged BS l have ever heard. Go home and stand in the corner until you realise how ridiculous you are. (l'm not gay, just for record).

I would rather have two same-sex parents (either sex) who love me than one or two heterosexuals who bicker and snipe and 'stay together for the children', meanwhile destroying the child's peace and home.

What an idiot.

Santorum, if there is any justice, you will get anal cancer and die slowly and painfully.

@Janet S...
You're just a sicko to think like that. If you even bothered to do some research....which I doubt anyone like you ever does....you'd find out that most child pornographers and pedophiles are STRAIGHT men. So, where's you documented proof that such things like you described happens? All you are is another bigot and hater...

@Huda G.
What makes you think a same sex couple can't have a solid and loving relationship? I know some and they are more solid than most of the hetro relationships I know. Children don't care what sexual preference their parents ore or even what sex they are. All they want is someone to love them and keep them safe. And please supply your "research" that shows that children do better being around both sexes because every "real" authority on children, the child psychologists, state just the opposite. Again, it goes back to the love and security the child is given. Same sex couple are in a way better than hetro ones because they don't brainwash the kids into hating bigots like yourself and some of the others here. What will you do if one or more of your 6 kids is gay? Seeing where you live, you'll probably stone them to death.

just think of all the 'privilege's' being wasted away in foster care.
Janet S. the "possibility" you speak of happenes every day in every state in hetero parents homes with their own or adopted children. don't judge others by your own measure.
