Santorum Backs Invalidating All Gay Marriages

Santorum Backs Invalidating All Gay Marriages

Presidential hopeful Rick Santorum has once again hit out at marriage equality, saying in a news segment broadcast Friday that he would “invalidate” all same-sex marriages.

In a discussion with Chuck Todd forNBC Nightly News, Santorum repeated his support for a federal constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

When Todd asked whether Mr. Satorum thought same-sex marriage “was going to be a state issue,” the former senator, who has oftentalked up his “small government” philosophy, replied, “I think marriage has to be one thing for everybody. We can’t have 50 different marriage laws in this country, you have to have one marriage law.”

Currently the 1996 federal Defense of Marriage Act bans the federal government from recognizing same-sex marriage but allows states to define marriage as they see fit (although this autonomy is still impinged by DOMA’s restrictions in a variety of areas including how married same-sex couples are taxed).

Given that a number of states have already legalized same-sex marriage however, Todd then asked what Mr. Santorum would do about those same-sex couples who are already married. Would they be forced to get divorced?

“Well, their marriages would be invalid” because they would not be “consistent with the Constitution” replied Santorum.

Lest any of us think that Mr. Santorum is being unfair, he added that he wanted to be “tolerant” but the “real consequences” of same-sex marriage meant that he had to take a firm stance.

Offering that same-sex couples can contract for “just about everything” except “direct” government benefits (those totaling well over a thousand), he opined:

“Marriage is a special relationship. I can be your friend and that’s a very good and important relationship. The love I have for my aunt is a very important relationship. But it’s not as important for the health of society of men and women coming together, joining together in marriage, having children and raising those children for the future of society.”

Santorum has frequently asserted the “special” nature of marriage and how he believes it must be protected, even going as far as to say he would “die” to keep the union a heterosexuals-only contract.

A Des Moines Register poll released over the weekend saw Mr. Santorum make strong gains gains. Find out more here.

Wow this brought out some really crazy rants on this post.

Santorum is a religious fanatic. Despite his strong religious beliefs, he is not a squeaky clean, ethical guy.

CREW named him one of the most corrupt politicians in 2005 due to the Weather Service bill. He never met a War on Terror he didn't want to fully fund, yet voted against the Lautenberg amendment which would've closed the loophole that allows companies like Haliburton to do business with Iran. He supports "enhanced interrogation" ie torture, having said in 2011 that John McCain (who obviously knows something about being a POW) does not understand how the process works.

He says he's for small government - except when it comes to the government controlling your personal life, including women's bodies, birth control and your bedroom. Why is he wasting time talking about a silly Constitutional Amendment on marriage when a true threat to our republic exists from the Citizens United ruling?

Sam T. God told Noah to build the ark for the animals and his family. The rest of the peole were warned about their behavior and doing bad things to one another. God warned them they didn't listen so he destroyed the earth. He cared about the animals so they were saved (only two of each kind). One MALE and one FEMALE. God doesn't care more about animals than people. People just don't listen!!!!!

Erich K. I beg to differ. Gay marriages also end in divorce. Rosie O'Donnell.

What a closed mind, asinine idiot. Where can he prove that having gay parents means that the parents would teach their children gay sex? That would be child molestation and it's a proven fact that most child molesters are heterosexuals. That's as stupid as the idiot Republican who said "It's snowing so there is no global warming". And these people want to run our nation? God help us!!

To those that are off subject and ranting about pro-life: You have a right to be pro-life in your own life! I am pro-choice and I think it is child neglect to have more kids than you have arms! I can't go and take people's kids away from them that have more kids than arms! We have a very serious over population problem that is a newer problem. Do you really think human life has more value than the animals and wildlife that gets killed from our over population and greed??? I think of Noah's ark where God was mostly worried his animals and just need Noah to build the boat!

Glenna, Kudos!!! The sad thing is the people who agree with you know and those fools who don't won't get and still are allowed to vote!

Erich, you are so right! I am straight and I never married because too many straight marriages end in divorce! I believe in freedom of religion and separation of church and state! If you believe something is wrong then simply do not do it and let others to make their own decisions. I am a proud Pagan and I still know the Bible tells you not to judge! I may act more Christian than most real Christians do!

Oh, for those of you that can't stand Santorum PLEASE Google his name! You will laugh your butt off!

Didn't expect anything else from that creepshow, backed by Murdoch.
He's a religious nutcase.

Politicians only obey the constitution IF it meets their agendas. Although they take an oath to uphold the Constitution, they commit perjury every time they violate it. But, of course, politicians are above the law. They are all crooks and commit treason all the time. Remember, GWB said the Constitution "was just a G**D***ed piece of paper". And that's all it is to our leaders.

@Maria L.: I have a Bible from my grandmother' mother, and i tell you this. I have only found one, just ONE, verse that mentions homosexual relationships. I have others that hint at it, but hinting means nothing if the hints can mean many thing. and as far as my knowledge goes that verse that mentions homosexual relationships is STILL IN THE BIBLE. It was never removed. Also, you and several others sound like you are judging others based only on their lifestyle, one the fact that they do don't life by YOUR religion, which is AGAINST THE BIBLE as well.

This is not a debate about what is right and wrong gay marriage from a RELIGIOUS STAND POINT! But what is right and wrong from a LEGAL standpoint, a Constitutional standpoint, where marriage is NEVER mentioned in the Constitution. Religion is separate from the State because our Founding Fathers saw the damn that was done by combining the two as a whole. They saw people die at the hand of the governments. Please drop the religious debate about what is right and wrong for the country from a religious stand point. The president can be a Hindu for all I care AS LONG AS he still upholds the Constitution.

GAY MARRIAGE= HAPPY and FUN ---------> ONLY "STRAIGHT MARRIAGES" end up in DIVORCE! And our 15 soon to be SWEET 16 year old has grown up JUST FINE all of her life and is probably one of the most brightest in her school, let alone class. She is already accepting Scholarships for Abroad programs for accelerated academic students... you mean to tell me that age 41.5 that I am a BAD parent, OR not allowed to marry? Funny, we are LEGALLY married before the Government of Republicants told us in CA - NO WAY ARE YOU EQUAL!!!! Seems like RELIGION and STATE are interfering AGAIN.... OH yeah, that is what the MAJORITY OF REPUBLICANTS do.... INTERFERE. EQUAL RIGHTS MEANS FOR EVERYONE. Next you tell all of us that a Bi-racial person cannot marry because they are a "mixed breed." HOW FAR BACK ARE WE TURNING HERE PEOPLE? GET OFF THE BUS OR GO TO THE BACK......
