Santorum: Better a Convict Father than Same-Sex Parents

Rick Santorum surprised many during a question and answer session in New Hampshire this past weekend when he declared that research shows children do better in families where a father is incarcerated and has abandoned his child than those in a same-sex parent household.

What’s more, Santorum believes that in your heart you all know this to be true.

From the Los Angeles Times:

For the second time in as many days, Rick Santorum waded into the issue of gay marriage, suggesting it was so important for children to have both a father and mother that an imprisoned father was preferable to a same-sex parent.

Citing the work of one anti-poverty expert, Santorum said, “He found that even fathers in jail who had abandoned their kids were still better than no father at all to have in their children’s lives.”

[...]

Allowing gays to marry and raise children, Santorum said, amounts to “robbing children of something they need, they deserve, they have a right to. You may rationalize that that isn’t true, but in your own life and in your own heart, you know it’s true.”

Santorum has not yet elaborated on who in fact did this research and when it was published — with many groups contending that he cannot because such a study does not exist.

There is a wealth of data that shows same-sex parents raise children at least as well as their heterosexual counterparts, and there is also some evidence to suggest that female couples may even provide homes in which children are less likely to be sexually abused.

Santorum has not done well in New Hampshire when it comes to the same-sex marriage issue. He was booed by college students late last week when he compared same-sex marriage to polygamy, and polls suggest Santorum’s support among independents, who are able to vote in New Hampshire’s Republican contest, dropped from 6 percent to 3 percent after the college event, while his support among 18 to 34 year olds dropped from 9 percent to 2 percent.

Santorum, who believes he’s been pretty restrained on gay rights issues, recently said that he would “invalidate” all same-sex marriages. Read more on that here.

one candidate straps his dog to the roof of his car, another wants to move us to the moon, and this one, well what more can i say. if the Democrats blow this election there's no hope left for the human race as we've abandoned all science, logic, and compassion.

Thank you for this article Steve.
Depressing as it is that Rick Santorum is mouthing such rubbish and that people actually listen to him as if he made sense, some of the comments I've just read here are brilliant!

Good job, Santorum. Just lost a lot of votes. Let's be quiet & let these politicans keep speaking & showing their horrendous, bigoted selves. They will do it to themselves.
