Santorum Prepares to Battle Against Dutch “Forced Euthanasia”

Former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum has become such a warrior for the culture of life, that he is now vowing to fight the growing problem of “forced euthanasia” in the Netherlands.

Even though no such thing actually exists.

According to the New York Times, the Christian conservative crusader bemoaned the country’s policy, stating that forced euthanasia accounts for 5 percent of all deaths in the Netherlands. “they have voluntary euthanasia in the Netherlands, but half the people who are euthanized every year ó and itís 10 percent of all deaths for the Netherlands ó half of those people are euthanized involuntarily, at hospitals, because they are older and sick. And so elderly people in the Netherlands donít go to the hospital, they go to another country, because theyíre afraid because of budget purposes that they will not come out of that hospital if they go into it with sickness.”

Except, as the Dutch points out, there is no forced euthanasia in the country.

“An embassy spokeswoman, Carla Bundy, explained that the Dutch government preferred not to intervene in an American political campaign. But Ms. Bundy did provide The Lede with documents and official statistics showing that there are no provisions of Dutch law that permit forced euthanasia. Voluntary euthanasia, which has been legal since 2002, accounted for about 2 percent of deaths in the Netherlands in 2010.”

But it shouldn’t be surprising to anyone who knows Santorum’s political past to learn that he made up “forced euthanasia.”† After all, this is the man who’s claim to fame was the “partial birth abortion” ban in Congress, despite the fact that there is actually no such procedure as a “partial birth abortion” and that the resulting description was so broad it could refer even to abortions routinely used anytime after the first trimester.

This screwball, Mr. Santorum, can only fool some of the people, some of the time, not all of the people, all the time, and that includes the Netherlands.

All of the "facts" he gave were completely bogus. When confronted by a Dutch reporter about it, his spokesperson said "Well that's what he felt in his heart". Oh great, screw the facts.

Nothing like more fact-free statements from another idiot who believes in fascism under the church with liberty and justice for no one.

This 'man' is a blithering idiot.

Never allow FACTS to get in the way of a good CRUSADE, Mr. Santorum.

Oy! And people actually vote for this nut?
Must be a hoax.

I'm sure the Dutch would laugh out loud at Santorum and tell him to bugger off like he deserves. Euthanasia is practiced in Holland but under VERY strict controls and is always sanctioned by the patient him/herself after thorough counselling and review. Very often the patient himself performs the procedure, if able, by pressing an IV button that injects an anaesthetic to sedate the person and then the release by a timer of a substance such as succinylcholine that stops the breathing. This ensures the person is asleep and it is not physically painful.
He has no clue. Furthermore, what business of his are the laws of another democratic country. Arrogance!

Like any good evangelical, Santorum never lets truth get in the way of a good talking point.

Wow and to think I wanted to be American. If he becomes president I do not even think I will visit during his term.

Steve P says the exact same thing day in and day out. He brags about having a job but never mentions what kind of job he has. Anyone can come here and post anything but that doesn't make it true. All he really comes here for is to try and make himself look better when in fact, all he does is make himself look pathetic. Just be glad you don't have to put up with him in real life.
