Imagine watching a small doggie crate plummet from a second story hotel balcony, knowing a little dog is inside. That’s what stunned witnesses saw, and what the police had trouble believing — until they saw the hotel surveillance video that captured it all.
Marcell Sibley, 29, reportedly was angry at his little Yorkshire Terrier. He’d taken it for a walk on June 27th, but it hadn’t yet done its business when he headed back toward his room. The hotel surveillance video shows that the dog apparently waited to relieve itself until it was nearly back at Sibley’s room. For some reason, Sibley told police later, he just “snapped.”
The video shows a man believed to be Sibley grabbing the poor dog by the neck and slapping it as he enters his room. Moments later, he re-emerges holding the dog crate with the Yorkie inside. Angrily, he flings it over the balcony to the concrete below. Horrified witnesses called 911. The incident occurred at an extended-stay hotel in Marietta, Ga.
“I think it takes a sick individual to mistreat a little animal. I don’t care if it’s a dog or cat or whatever,” Don Dugan, another resident of the hotel, told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

After the crate smashed onto the ground, witnesses say Sibley came down, picked up the debris, and threw it — dog and all — into a dumpster. He then reportedly left the scene. He was later located and arrested at his home.
One of the witnesses pulled the smashed crate and the dog out of the dumpster. Police determined the Yorkie was still alive, but it had blood on its mouth, was not moving and had broken legs. Cobb County Animal Control is now caring for the dog.
“Animals are just like children,” Marietta Police Officer David Baldwin told Fox5 News. “They’re innocent and they’re helpless and they really require all of our help to make sure that we care for them and take care of them, and when you see something as tragic as this, it really tugs at the heart strings.”
Initially there were fears that the little Yorkie had spinal injuries and might not make it. Fortunately, according to Cobb County Animal Control, the dog will make a full recovery. They say the Yorkie is “doing fine and gets lots of TLC.”
Sibley has been charged with felony aggravated animal cruelty, which in Georgia carries a possible penalty of one to five years in prison.
With a little luck, the Yorkie’s next stop will be a loving new forever home.
