Smart ALEC: One Group is Taking Over Our State Legislatures

Want to know who’s behind all these horrible anti-everything-we-stand-for legislation in state legislatures across the country?

ALEC. And, BP, AT&T, Chevron, UPS, Wall-Mart, Fed-Ex, Visa, TimeWarner…and pretty much every company or group you probably patronize.

The American Legislative Exchange Council is a shadowy group of conservative legislators, lawyers and corporations who mock-up model legislation that state senators and representatives can take home with them to ruin everything from workers’ rights to immigration rights to reproductive rights.

Yes, Virginia, there is a conspiracy to take over America.

And it’s happening one legislature at a time. ALEC Exposed is a coalition of groups and boots on the ground doing the dirty work of investigative reporting — from outing conservative legislature members to doing line by line comparison of model legislation to current bills in state senates and houses.  And there’s a lot of material to go on.

This week, the ALEC Secret Society is in New Orleans for their annual conference and are making headlines among progressive groups roughing up journalists trying to get in.

Oh and they are passing out anti-LGBT pamphlets. Anti-LGBT pamphlets that debunk the homosexual propaganda lies like “people are born gay” or “homosexuals are no more likely to molest children than heterosexuals.”

That’s some conference you got there.

So are you angry yet?

Write a letter to all of these companies you’ve done business with and write your state legislator to out the members of ALEC.

The more we know, the better we can take them down.

P.S. I’d like to give a special shout-out to the military service men and women and their families because guess who’s a sponsor, too? Yep, it’s our bank: USAA. Hoo-rah! I’m writing a eloquently worded yet decidedly stern letter, are you?

The Republicans had so many concessions given to them by the Obama administration that they may as well have written it themselves with the help of the Health care/Insurance industries like medicare part D was. That is the main reason so many Progressives stayed home during the 2010 elections and we got a whole lot of buyer's remorse for that non-action.

ALEC is a 501(c)3 corporation, a non-profit organization whose donations are conveniently tax deductible. I am wondering how a 501(c)3 corporation can do so much politicking and still keep their non-profit tax-deductible status...anyone???

I am compiling a list of ALEC corporate members along with as many of their products so that we can start hitting them where it will hurt by boycotting their products.

I have a blog at: where I will be posting the list soon.

You are just another right wing-nut who cannot see what rights have been stripped away by your ilk in the last 12 years. The occupy movement now shows how militarized our civilian police forces have become and the combat style tactics they now use on peaceful demonstrators across the country. You are probably right there at your tv cheering the police on as you claim to want to leave your children with more freedom. Every police action has an opposite reaction as more and more Americans sympasthize with the protestors every time the police cross the first amendment rights of the protestors dressed in full combat gear. You must be one of those idiots who blindly follow Ayn Rand, the speed freak who was hooked on amphetamines while she wrote "Fountainhead" and "Atlas Shrugged". As one of the 3 matriarches of libertarianism she railed against the poor and destitute and their need for government assistance of any kind. In the end she was as two faced as you and the rest of your kind are today in that she took Social Security and Medicare benefits but did so under her marriend name Ann O'Connor, a name she rarely if ever had used.

As far as your elected officials not knowing what was in the health Care Reform Bill, just what were the Republicans in the House and Senate committees doing when it was actually written up (Tides foundation my a##). The Republicans had so many concessions given to them by the Obama administration that they may as well have written it th

ALEC (American Legislative Exchange Council) was formed by three Conservatives in 1973 in order to promote right wing social agendas by writing legislative frameworks for state legislators and with Task Forces during the Reagan Administration. Much like the Tea Party movement was coopted by ALEC, the original ALEC was coopted by Corporate America in the late 80s/early 90s as the Koch brothers tried to slither back into the power after their John Birch Society was ostracized by even the far right Conservative Party after Glodwater's trouncing in 1964. ALEC now has close to or just over 400 corporate members with pockets deep enough to buy any politicians on all levels. ALEC has over 100 dirty energy members to push the anti-EPA and anti-global warming agenda, over 80 Health & /nsurance industry members who used ALEC's resources to fund Dick Armey's coopting of the Tea Party movement to push death panels and other such nonsense to fight tooth and nail against any real health care reform that would help the 99%, over 60 financial sector fight to keep any and all regulations away from Wall St and the too big to fail banks. there are at least 2 private prison corporations who use ALEC's political apparatus to toughen laws and make stricter sentencing to keep their for profit prisons filling and full for the foreseeble future (who needs the scale of justice when you have the backing of billions at your disposal. ALEC is a 501(c)3 corporation, a non-profit organization whose don

A few days ago the Rachel Maddow show discussed several attempts by Democrats to get moving on legislature that would create jobs. These ideas didn't get much news time, and you guessed it, they were all derailed by the Republican Congressmen.
