Summer of Mercy 2.0 versus Summer Celebration of Choice

71 comments Summer of Mercy 2.0 versus Summer Celebration of Choice

I will never forget the shock I felt when I found out that Dr. George Tiller was murdered. As one of the only late-term abortion providers in the country, I knew threats against him were real, but I was shocked that someone actually succeeded in killing him. Is Dr. LeRoy Carhart next?

Anti-Choice Protest: The Summer of Mercy 2.0

Twenty years ago, back in 1991 the pro-life community held a protest in Wichita, Kansas against Tiller’s late-term abortion practice. The event became known as “The Summer of Mercy” and this summer there will be a revival of the event in Germantown, Maryland targeted against Dr. LeRoy Carhart’s abortion clinic. The event has been coined the Summer of Mercy 2.0 which will be held from July 30 to August 7th.

In counter-protest to the Summer of Mercy 2.0, the pro-choice community has organized their own event, the Summer Celebration of Choice, which will run roughly around the same time from July 31 to August 6th.

The Summer Celebration of Choice: What Are People Saying

Lindsey Creekmore, co-board chair of the Abortion Access Fund, one of the sponsors of the Summer Celebration of Choice says the following about the event:

“Summer of Mercy 1991 was a catalyst to the following 18 years of harassment, legal battles, attempted murder and multiple clinic vandalisms directed towards Dr. George Tiller, which ultimately resulted in his tragic assassination in 2009. Our goal is to show America that extreme anti-choice tactics will not be supported in Germantown, MD.”

In addition, the National Organization for Women  (NOW) has recently passed a resolution of support for the event.

“We need to be blunt about what’s happening here,” NOW Action Vice President Erin Matson has said, “This is terrorism. Dr. Carhart is a hero. He stands up for women when it is unpopular, when he’s a target of terrorism, when people threaten his life. He is one of the best champions for women’s fundamental right to control their own destiny.”

I could not agree more. Abortion providers face tremendous obstacles in doing the work they do – work that is done with the sole purpose of caring for women. Constant protests, threats, harassment and stalking culminated in the murder of Dr. Tiller, a man who dedicated his life to serving women. Let’s not let that happen again.

Can we please stop calling it pro-life? They are murderers, so anti-choice would be a better name for their movement. If they were pro-life, they would not support violence against abortion providers who are much more human than an unborn baby who cannot survive on its own without an umbilical cord attached.

Iva, I am not trying to shove my religon down your throat. I quoted bilbe verses in reply to Sally D's post.

We are all allowed to protest. Good for the pro life movement.

Oh and hey! there may be a few good men out there, so excuse me for bringing this up:

Women get pregnant because of men. If men would take responsibility for their behavior and be certain they do not impregnate women, there would be NO need for abortion. Let's face it, boys, whether you like it or not, condoms are the way to go for many reasons. Much easier and healthier than having to have an abortion. I have been noticing that this simple fix is NEVER brought up in the press. But then again, this is the movement to get women back to where they belong, remember? The good old boys are in charge and they want women back to barefoot and pregnant. So are we gong to submit like women did for hundreds of years before decent birth control, or are we going to say, "NO"?

This is only one example of American terrorists masquerading as so-called "christian" . Apparently many people have forgotten the meaning of that word. It appears that alot of misinformation is being propagandized from pulpits. Hence, there are a sea of intellectually impaired individuals out there doing not God's will, but some fire-breathing, hell-bent (take that as you may) maniac who is preaching lies and fomenting violence. And those very folks have a bone to pick with Muslims!! hahaha!! This runs so counter to any real sense of spiritual charity, I am appalled. Yet, bundled with everything else going on in this country at this time, it seems like a part of a very jagged, ugly puzzle. May god have mercy on the rest of us.

Yea Iva. You're so right. I am so tired of people trying to push their religious beliefs off onto me. If someone doesn't believe in choice then let her not choose. Human beings are air-breathers. Until a fetus breathes air and lives, it is not a person, it is, at best, a potential person. As far as I am concerned, one can't give person-hood to a fetus.
As far as David is concerned, he was a good poet, hardly a role-model for future humanity, unless you believe in killing the husband to have the wife. And under color of authority, at that. Come on, believe what you want, but don't try to verify it for the rest of us.
Oh, by the way, what have you defenders of fetuses done for the starving children of Africa lately? Or aren't they persons? How about the starving children of America? That, not David and his harp, are your credentials.

And yes, David wrote most of the psalms in the desert while running away from Saul. But God spoke through him. "All scripture is inspired, and profitable to all men."
So it's like God speaking directly to you, IVA, when He says He knew you before you and loved you before He knit you in your mothers womb.

Wow Iva. I'm in shock. You have called me egocentric, dishonest, imbecilic, selfish, hate filled, and a control freak, as well as adverbs such as braying, sniveling, whining, etc.
When will the anger end? Why can't you be civil?
A baby at 20 weeks is already a boy or girl, can suck it's thumb, yawn, stretch, make faces, and has a sleep cycle. Sounds alive to me... And yeah, it can't live outside the womb very successfully (although some have survived) and that's why we should leave it alone to continue on it's life journey.

Wow, Iva, I have never read such an intelligent, factual discussion of abortion in my
whole life. Everything you wrote I agree with 1000% but I can't express it like you
did. You are a genius. Have you written a book and if not, will you please? I have
gagged for so many years while brainwashed people tried to push religious bullshit
down my throat. I admire you. :)

What a big, brave man. Poor excuse for a man, I say. He should be sent to jail for his crime!!

Actually, I don't think the mice had much to do with it, after all.
