Susan B. Anthony List Gives Up On that Whole “Women” Thing

When I think of feminist icon Susan B. Anthony, I think first of all about her tireless and vocal defense of the unborn.

No, wait, I don’t.† Because honestly, she said very little about abortion.

Yet somehow a conservative group has taken her historical drive to see women become equal players with men when it comes to the political field, and replaced it with a mission to ensure that any woman running for office who accepts the idea that all women have a right to decide when and if they want to carry a child to term should be defeated, even if that means a man should take over that elected official’s seat.

It is no coincided that in the “year of the political woman,” as many decreed 2010, Susan B. Anthony List sprung into the limelight with their mission to support women who believe in the rights of a fetus at all points of conception over the rights of women.† At the same time, once the election dust settled, there were less women in Congress after an election than prior to it for the first time in decades.

Susan B. Anthony List didn’t just bring anti-choice women into the political arena — it also pit Republican men against Democratic women, and even a Republican man against an anti-choice Democratic woman.† Their mission creep as they targeted anti-choice Democrats with even more anti-choice Republicans made it clear that women were the facade, and growing a GOP majority was the real cause.

Now, the list has given up on any sort of pretense.† They’ve revamped their website and have begun informing the media that their new mission is simply to defeat EMILY’s List candidates.† As the group told Politico:

We do run against EMILY’s List candidates. They endorse pro-abortion women and we endorse pro-life candidates so we are always going to be on the other side of the issue from them, not because they are Democrats but because they are pro-abortion. Their mission is to elect “pro-choice democratic women.” For them “pro-choice” and “democrat” are linked. For us they are not. The part of their mission we act as their counterpart to is the “pro-choice” part, not the “democrat” part.

What Marilyn said is that because EMILY’s List only endorses pro-abortion women, we will sometime endorse pro-life men who run against them, because we are on the other side of the Life issue from EMILY’s List.

The SBA group now publicly admits it exists for the sole purpose of defeating any woman running for office if that woman happens to be pro-choice.

What would Susan B. Anthony think of that?

If I could speak for Susan, ... she would be appalled. I am appalled that such a group chose such a prestigious feminist name. It's always galled me also, that they got the "pro-life" title, when we pro-choicers are for a woman's LIFE. Back in the day, women died from back-alley abortions, and now we have safety for women to make the choice of how they want their lives to be.

She'd say it was idiotic.

You know, it's amazing how many pro-choice individuals sound exactly like the most fundamentalist anti-choicer - in reverse. The same strident ugliness, the same desire to unreasonably demonize those with whom they disagree in order to promote an agenda. The same utter unwillingness to actually consider that those they disagree with could actually hold their position honestly. Not a hair's difference between them.

I'd welcome you to the club - only it's a club I wouldn't set foot in.

What these anti choice people fail to understand is that every child should be a wanted child. We all have, no doubt seen the end results of what happens when an unwanted child is born and grows up. Sure some of them come out normal, but many are the ones who fill our prison system. I know first hand as I worked as a prison guard in the 1980's, male, medium security prison in Michigan.

Maarja L: Your comment may not be sci-fi as you think. We transplant organs, have taken a fetus out of the womb and operated on it and replaced it in the mother, have taken fetal lab animals and places that embryonic or fetal animal into another host mother. I do believe that we could transplant these unwanted fetuses into the womb of these right to lifers / anti choice or abortion foes and sign over all parental rights upon transplant as these people seem to want to make certain there is an excess of more people on the planet than Mother Earth can provide for and keep everyone healthy. Too bad these people who just want quantity -too much of anything over quality of people need to understand that sometimes less is more is a good thing.

Pro-lifers should be called ANTI-CHOICEers.

Anti-choice people, mistakenly called, pro-lifers, are extremely vengeceful, in nature, in general. They love to force a woman to have a baby, she does not want, and than could care less about the infant, once it is born.
I would suggest, that their childhood, was not that pleasant, IN GENERAL,of course....... lest I hear about what a fantastic upbringing they, actually, had.
One might want to investigate!!!

When, oh when, will people start to face the fact that abortion is not about life or children?
It is about POWER & CONTROL, of the masses, as it has always been.

How many children in this world, require assistance to live, with food and clothing? If you don't care about them, how do you care about life, in general.
Surely, you would NOT agree with the death penalty. You have no idea, the mental state of a person, who probably, was not wanted, in the first place.

Every born child, needs to feel wanted and loved. I, for one, do not want tax dollars to go for incarcerating people, who, no one wanted in the first place. If you are incapable of comprehending this reality, YOU can personally, pay for their jail time.

I believe in 'quality' over 'quantity'. If you want to run someone else's life, adopt. That will fix a lot of problems, OR WILL IT?

I support the right for a woman to choose. Period. It is her choice as an individual, not society's. It is wrong to put a fetus's "rights" before a woman's. I feel that forcing a woman to carry out an unwanted pregnancy is the same as forcing them to terminate it. I don't support abortion as a form of birth control; that problem can be solved by making ACTUAL birth control widely available.

And, as many point out all the time, why are the pro-life people so concerned about the baby before it's born, but then after it's born they don't care if it starves to death or has no roof over it's head? If they are so protective over these fetuses then they should be supporting public programs to feed, house, and educate them as infants, toddlers, children, and adults. In other words if you are pro-life stop whining about having to pay taxes to support welfare! I don't understand why logic doesn't have to rule morals at all.

Marianne C said it best, so I will just direct my sentiments to her comment.

I am annoyed these people use Susan B Anthony's name for their "cause" - what a twisting of words.

Pro-life seems to equal with pro-punishment and pro-fetus.

The only way I'd consent not to abort a pregnancy I didn't want (and was therefore actively trying to prevent)? Remove the precious clump of cells from my uterus, let it grow to term in uterine replicator (the maintenance of it should be pro-lifers' worry) and never give either of us information about the name, address etc of the other. Sadly, this is sci-fi.

I think these "censored" %&%^***%&* idiots should crawl back under their rocks.
