When I think of feminist icon Susan B. Anthony, I think first of all about her tireless and vocal defense of the unborn.
No, wait, I don’t. Because honestly, she said very little about abortion.
Yet somehow a conservative group has taken her historical drive to see women become equal players with men when it comes to the political field, and replaced it with a mission to ensure that any woman running for office who accepts the idea that all women have a right to decide when and if they want to carry a child to term should be defeated, even if that means a man should take over that elected official’s seat.
It is no coincided that in the “year of the political woman,” as many decreed 2010, Susan B. Anthony List sprung into the limelight with their mission to support women who believe in the rights of a fetus at all points of conception over the rights of women. At the same time, once the election dust settled, there were less women in Congress after an election than prior to it for the first time in decades.
Susan B. Anthony List didn’t just bring anti-choice women into the political arena — it also pit Republican men against Democratic women, and even a Republican man against an anti-choice Democratic woman. Their mission creep as they targeted anti-choice Democrats with even more anti-choice Republicans made it clear that women were the facade, and growing a GOP majority was the real cause.
Now, the list has given up on any sort of pretense. They’ve revamped their website and have begun informing the media that their new mission is simply to defeat EMILY’s List candidates. As the group told Politico:
We do run against EMILY’s List candidates. They endorse pro-abortion women and we endorse pro-life candidates so we are always going to be on the other side of the issue from them, not because they are Democrats but because they are pro-abortion. Their mission is to elect “pro-choice democratic women.” For them “pro-choice” and “democrat” are linked. For us they are not. The part of their mission we act as their counterpart to is the “pro-choice” part, not the “democrat” part.
What Marilyn said is that because EMILY’s List only endorses pro-abortion women, we will sometime endorse pro-life men who run against them, because we are on the other side of the Life issue from EMILY’s List.
The SBA group now publicly admits it exists for the sole purpose of defeating any woman running for office if that woman happens to be pro-choice.
What would Susan B. Anthony think of that?
