Susan Sarandon: This Is How We Can Defeat Dakota Access Pipeline

By now, you’ve probably heard about the Dakota Access Pipeline, or DAPL. Native American tribes and others have been protesting the 1,172-mile pipeline that would carry 400,000 barrels of crude oil daily through multiple states. They note the pipeline will disturb sacred burial sites and pollute the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s drinking water in the Missouri River.

That’s right – the Standing Rock Sioux’s only water source will be endangered by this pipeline.

They have put their bodies on the line to stop the construction and defend their water and their way of life. The police brutality and violence in response to their peaceful demonstrations has been outrageous, and must not continue.

There has been a groundswell of folks speaking out on social media and in person, but the oil company has not budged.

Now, it’s time to speak in the only language the oil company understands: money. We have to put our money where our mouth is and withdraw our money from the big banks that are funding this pipeline, including Wells Fargo, Chase, Bank of America and Citigroup.

Join me by pledging to withdraw your money from these big banks until they agree to:

1. Divest from Energy Transfer Partners, the parent company of the Dakota Access Pipeline.

2. Pressure President Obama to halt construction and put a stop to the human rights violations against the Native Americans at Standing Rock.

When you go to your bank (Bank of America, HSBC, UBS, Wells Fargo, Chase, Citibank, etc.), film yourself withdrawing money telling the bank that you will take your business to Federal Credit Unions until they divest from Dakota Access Pipeline.

After filming your #BankExit, post it to social and challenge your friends to do the same! Tweet your video: @BarackObama @WellsFargo @Chase @Citibank @HSBC_US #BankExit http://bit.ly/2ffFr01

Demand President @BarackObama call for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which will effectively put a stop to this human rights violation against the Native Americans at Standing Rock.

Native Americans have been fighting to stop the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline for months. It’s time for us to join them any way we can. We have to act with the knowledge that social justice, economic justice and environmental justice are all connected.

Sign my Care2 petition to show the big banks funding DAPL that we will not allow them to use our money to threaten the Standing Rock Sioux.

Once you’ve signed, please send a tweet inviting your friends to sign as well.

If you would like to read about truth and see what is really happening on a weekly basis with protests about water, burial grounds, pipeline construction, and the Native American Population, google The Dickinson Press. It is open to the public without subscription. Enough, the Native Americans, Corp of Engineers, and North Dakota Government can work this out. Quit stirring the pot.

These banks are at the top of the list of banks accepting bailout money in the crash of 2008, of paying enormous fines for criminally fraudulent behavior; although I have not used them since 2008 and their behavior was exposed if not prosecuted, a mass exodus from these banks is long past due. I stand with the people of Standing Rock, and deplore this crass lack of concern for their water supply, their culturally significant lands; I stand firmly against these big banks in this and every other instance of corporate malfeasance.

The money trail has been traced, please get out. Your protesters are not welcomed in our State.

Please get your protesters out of North Dakota. Your money trial has been traced and you should protest the corrupt behavior in California and Washington DC from which you derive your financial support instead of disrupting progress to construct a safer means of transporting a natural resource . Protesters have burned public and private property, including construction equipment, trespassed on private property, flew drones to attach law enforcement aircraft, killed livestock, and unlawfully chain them selves to construction equipment. I don't come to your house and start a fire in the driveway, block your roads, and claim to be holding a prayer meeting. Take your SUV's, cell phones, and other private possessions derived from petroleum products including dirty movies, and unwelcomed behavior to California and Washington DC. You are breaking the law, and owe Native Americans and citizens of ND an apology and about $ 10 million for your unlawful actions. Sincerely, a law abiding North Dakota citizen.
