Tea Party Group Urges Small Businesses ‘Not To Hire A Single Person’ To Hurt Obama

Written by Marie Diamond, ThinkProgress

Congressional Republicans have acted shocked and offended at Democrats’ suggestions that they are intentionally sabotaging the economy to try to win back the White House in 2012. Republicans have refused to pass President Obama’s jobs plan — which experts estimate will create at least 1.9 million jobs — and proposed an alternative plan that Moody’s says “will likely push the economy back into recession.”

Now influential Tea Party leaders are throwing caution to the wind and openly lobbying business owners to stop hiring in order to hurt Obama politically. This week, Right Wing Watch picked up on a message Tea Party Nation sent to their members from conservative activist Melissa Brookstone.

In a rambling letter titled “Call For A Strike of American Small Businesses Against The Movement for Global Socialism,” Brookstone urges businesses “not hire a single person” to protest “this new dictator”:

Resolved that: The current administration and Democrat majority in the Senate, in conjunction with Progressive socialists from all around the country, especially those from Hollywood and the left leaning news media (Indeed, most of the news media.) have worked in unison to advance an anti-business, an anti-free market, and an anti-capitalist (anti-individual rights and property ownership) agenda. [...]

I, an American small business owner, part of the class that produces the vast majority of real, wealth producing jobs in this country, hereby resolve that I will not hire a single person until this war against business and my country is stopped.

Brookstone cites Democrats’ support of the Occupy Wall Street movement as proof that Obama, media elites, and the like are “against business, private property ownership and capitalism.” Although she fails to explain how a freeze on hiring would send a bold pro-business message, given that such a boycott would further damage the economy and exacerbate high national unemployment.

But these Tea Partiers are only too happy to put politics ahead of the well-being of 14 million unemployed Americans, not to mention the businesses who are looking for qualified workers.

"The tea party is truly a negative force in our society. We all knew that they were working for the overthrow of the federal government and this proves it. The tea party is just a small group of angry, old, white racists and bigots who hate immigrants, minorities, the middle class and the poor and who can't stand the fact that we have a black president. They've already lived their lives and they resent making any kind of contribution toward the running of this country or for the good of their fellow citizens. The tea party represent only the top 1% richest Americans and they are therefore an enemy of the people. During the French revolution they would have been dragged out in the street and beheaded. That is so true. My former supervisor was a 'Born again Christian, Tea Party Republican', who had the hate on just about everyone. She labeled them 'Witches', 'Warlocks','Spies', 'Goons' and every once in a great while she'll actually label someone as--Okay.

Mary V is 100% correct. Trickle down economics is the biggest lie since "the dog ate my homework". Telling it over and over again does not make it into the truth, all it does is gives the rich a "reason" to put more money in their pocket. If it were true the Bush tax cuts would have boosted us to fantastic prosperity, not the largest recession since the 1929 depression. We are an educated population now. Smoke and mirrors went out with the Wizard of OZ in 1939, so don't talk down to people like some country politician at a backwater crossing in the middle of no where.

As far as I'm concerned, most politicians and CEO's are crooks. They just get around the laws or change them to their advantage. They rob the poor and give to themselves.
They say "Taxing the wealthy takes away jobs" BS. Even if they paid no taxes, unemployment would stay the same or get worse. TAX the rich. Use the tax money to create jobs.

Heck even give businesses tax breaks based on how many employees they have/hire.

The proof that trickle down economics does not work is the unemployment rate. Neither did the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy create jobs and people like you are still defending this and not only asking to continue the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy but cut taxes even more for them. Why is it that you cannot see that doing the same thing over and over again and iexpecting different results is the first signs of insanity.

Looks like stupidity reigns in some of these comments. Some Repug followers are attacking a "no jobs" situation, the results of which they helped create. Idiots.

Christian R.

The war against the middle class and the poor by the super rich has been waged since 1980 when Reagan took office.
Now their war is out in the open since the largest bank heist in human history, thanks to bankers gambling with what we were told were "safe investments".
Banks privatized profits and socialized losses, and Bush and the Cons helped them do it.
Now they want our jobs, and they are gunning for us.
Time to take the gloves off and fight hard.
Go Occupy Wall Street Movement!
Let's fight for good jobs and good government, and shove these thieves to the curb or into a prison cell where they rightly belong.

Sure looks like treason to me!

Frances C.: Many banks are just trying to survive, as are many small (and medium) businesses. Banks hold the money of many people and businesses - all the money they have available is not necessarily their own. They have a duty to lend and invest the money they control in the wisest and safest way possible. If they use it foolishly, not only do they hurt themselves, but many others. In light of the present economic and financial situation, and the weakness of business in general, the banks are very leery of "going out on a limb" by making risky loans and investments. How can you blame them? Attacking the banks as the villains in the present economy is really off base, in my opinion.

Boycott AT&T and Verizon. Put your money where your values are. Money is what these creeps exist for and political power. There are companies with views opposite of the tea party fruit loops.

Also Don, just found out AT&T has donated $377,500 to members of the House Tea Party Caucus. In 2009-2010, AT&T gave $426,000 to House and Senate Tea Party Caucus members, while Verizon Wireless gave $48,000.
