Texas Will Get Rid Of Planned Parenthood And All Its Friends

Texas anti-choice advocates decided to bet the house in their battle to kick Planned Parenthood out of the state.

Texas Health and Human Services Executive Commissioner Dr. Kyle Janek announced this week that its newly created state health program for low-income women will not include Planned Parenthood or any of its affiliates, and if a federal court orders it to include the women’s health provider in the state-run program officials will shutter the program rather than let Planned Parenthood participate.

Currently the federal government pays for about 90 percent of Texas’ $39-million-a-year Women’s Health Program. But that funding is at risk after Texas voted to exclude Planned Parenthood or any of its affiliates from being included in the program.

The current federal-state health program provides contraception and health screenings. The state-funded program will provide those services plus treatment of certain sexually transmitted diseases, Janek said.

Rochelle Tafolla, a spokeswoman for Planned Parenthood Gulf Coast, which serves Houston and surrounding areas, said ending the program would be devastating for patients. “It’s shocking that they would rather end a program for low-income, uninsured women than to allow Planned Parenthood to provide these services,” she said in an interview with the Chicago Tribune.

As the Tribune reports, a study released this month by the George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services raised questions about whether other facilities would be able to absorb the patients now served by Planned Parenthood. “There is no evidence that they are prepared to sustain the very large caseload increases that would be required to fill the gaps left after Planned Parenthood affiliates are excluded,” the study said.

Janek must feel very big, taking on Washington this way. Of course, he’s playing politics with poor women, who have few advocates in the Texas state legislature. So really, that makes Janek nothing more than a power-drunk bully.

Isn't it incredible Michael that people like Jean have no compassion, kindness, empathy because they have become so jaded, so hardened by the far right ideologue, they feel truth even if it bit them in the ass. Jean is a classic example of what is so tragic on the right.

Jean P plies this same trash and nonsense on every forum she comes to Lee. I pity her as well but find her as tiresome as can be.

Jean P - seriously, does Care2 seem to you to be a site that would welcome individuals who have no interest in telling the truth, or worse yet; can't distinguish between a lie and the truth. I am a fundraiser on behalf of PPFA. PUBLIC FUNDS ARE NOT used for abortions. Not now, not ever. Only private funding provides for abortions that cannot be paid for by an individual, otherwise, the woman pays for it herself. 97.3% of the services PPFA provides is anything but abortions. You obviously are a Akin, lyin' Ryan, Romney, Murdoch fan, and you show your ignorance claiming to know what the hell you are talking about when in fact you have not the slightest clue. I really feel sorry for people like you Jean because you are filled with whatever it is that you pick up from the radical right who flaunt their propaganda as biblical verse. If you have children, I feel sorry for them. As for you; I PITY you!

@Robert, It isn’t often mentioned in American History texts but Latinos were discriminated against to at least the same degree as were African Americans in Texas and have been, in my opinion, perhaps a little slower coming to realize and wield their political power. Language may have been a factor. It must be recognized that the Spanish and Mexican cultures were established long before the Anglos came on the scene and for many Latinos, the border crossed them. Segregation only worked to delay the realization of their political strength and their acceptance of English. I’m pleased to say progress is being made. I had the privilege of voting for probably more Latinos on this year’s ballot than those with what are known as Anglo Surnames. There is a segment of the Latino community with strong conservative attitudes. Nevertheless though Perry was not in this year’s elections I have reasons to hope when next the office is on the ballot. But you gotta know we have a lot of white folks who are right-winged crazies who find his inability to recall 3 things endearing.

Jean P. - By federal law public money does not pay for abortions. Will you be making that check out to Planned Parenthood soon?

Michelle, you seem to know so much about Planned Parenthood I just have to ask how many screenings or other care procedures and abortions have you had at Planned Parenthood? You must be one of those loose women my mother told me about way back when.

LOL Jean P the self appointed/self-annointed demagogue has spoken. Kneel down in her presence one and all. She reigns supreme in her own mind.
