The Worst Moments Of The 112th Congress

  • 2 of 3

Created, then went over, the Fiscal Cliff.

The fiscal cliff is perhaps the greatest example of a 112th Congress boondoggle. When it was created, the goal of the so-called cliff, originally referred to as the “sequester” or the “trigger,” was to force Congress into rethinking taxes and spending by setting a hard deadline of December 31, 2012. Congress felt that such deep cuts to programs favored by both parties — domestic and military spending — would ensure they’d act before they went over ‘the cliff.’ Of course, not only did the House GOP take the US over the cliff before eventually relenting on some tax increases, they also punted the spending cuts, which are now set to take effect in two months.

Spent over $1.5 million to defend the ‘Defense of Marriage Act’.

When the Obama administration secretly approved a $500,000 increase in the now $2 million budget to defend the law. Meanwhile, Americans’ support for legal same-sex marriages is at an all-time high. The Supreme Court will rule on the law’s constitutionality in June.

Voted 317 times against the environment.

The House has taken 317 votes against the environment — either in the form of deregulation of environmental standards, or through the promotion of drilling for oil. They’ve also spent over one million dollars on a witch hunt investigation of energy company Solyndra, the conclusion of which was that they found “no evidence” of wrongdoing.

Well Robert, if the bill the House sent over to the Senate is really that bad and full of garbage benefits "for the rich"... I just love that... then maybe Captain DO NOTHING Harry Reid should put them to the floor for a vote and go on record stating this bill is nothing but garbage and we say NAY...

Too bad they don't, they leave them to die in committee or simply lay on the cutting room floor because they are not the pork laden for the rich bills you think they are.

I see you don't want to address the fact that the Senate refuses to pass a budget too.... but that republican house, those guy don't do a darn thing... OK, yeah... got it....

well Scott sensing a bill over isn't the issue. if you haven't read every bill and rider then you have no idea what kind of crap they sent. Most filled with tax breaks for the wealthy etc

Compared to other congresses they haven't done shit.

Lori... "The 112th Congress will go down in history as the worst congress in history. Complete was of time and taxpayers monies. They were nothing but a "DO NOTHING PARTY OF NO"...

You're a completely blind lemming of the left... the House of Representatives has passe MORE THAN 30 jobs bills that have been left for dead on the Senate floor... Captain DO NOTHING Harry Reid won't even call any of them up for a vote... How about the fact that the DO NOTHING Senate has not passed a budget in well over 1300 days... there is this document you may have heard of, it's called the US Constitution... it says the Senate needs to pass a budget EVERY YEAR... But why pass a budget, we can just spend spend spend... I hope your boy gets a good job because he has a HUGE bill of debt to pay for left to him by this garbage president you voted for.

Strangely enough, as long as unemployment is a worse problem than both interest rates and inflation, we stand a better chance of eventually balancing the budget with massive deficit spending for infrastructure repair including replacing fossil fuel with renewable energy than with austerity. Austerity at the level of a sovereign nation does NOT work. It just results in vulture capitalists making a strong effort to grab all the commons now in government hands.

I voted for Jill Stein on the Green Party as a write-in, so don't blame me for voting or not voting.

Robert O. You say "Let's hope things get better since they (hopefully) can't get much worse".

I think you underestimate our politicians greed.
