Top 5 GOP Members Who Deserve Coal in Their Stocking

Top 5 GOP Members Who Deserve Coal in Their Stocking
  • 1 of 2

Have you been naughty or nice this year? Tradition in Western culture has it that a child who has been naughty during the year will receive only a piece of coal in his/her stocking, and no toys at all.

Well, there are plenty of GOP members who have behaved very, very badly in 2012, and so deserve that lump of coal. Here are just five of my nominations; I’m sure you can think of plenty more.

Richard Mourdock

Mourdock was a Tea Party favorite who beat veteran incumbent Richard Lugar in Indiana’s Republican primary, and was initially tipped to win against Democrat Joe Donnelly. But at a debate last October, Mourdock affirmed that the life of the mother is the only exception he makes for abortion. Then, as Politico reported, he made this startling statement:

“I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that’s something God intended to happen.”

This seemed to be right in line with other Republicans in 2012. The good news is that Joe Donnelly beat Mourdock, as voters rejected Republican attempts to eviscerate women’s basic freedoms.

Todd Akin

Right up there with Mourdock we find Todd Akin, Republican Senate nominee from Missouri, who last August stated that pregnancy as a result of “legitimate rape” is rare as “the female body has ways to try and shut that whole thing down.”

From The Washington Post:

Rep. Todd Akin, the newly-christened GOP Senate nominee in Missouri, said in an interview airing Sunday that “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy.

Explaining his no-exceptions policy on abortions, Akin was asked why he opposes abortion even when the pregnancy is the result of rape.

“First of all, from what I understand from doctors, (pregnancy from rape) is really rare,” Akin told KTVI-TV in a clip posted to YouTube by the Democratic super PAC American Bridge. “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”

A lot of women were furious, but also wondered what on earth Akin was talking about. Thankfully, Akin was defeated by incumbent Claire McCaskill. With the defeat of Mourdock and Akin came the end of Republican party hopes of taking control of the Senate.

Joe Walsh

To make up a trio of misogynists, there’s Representative Joe Walsh of Illinois, whom Daily Kos labeled “The country’s most notorious deadbeat dad,” as well as a hater of gays and veterans. Walsh told reporters “you can’t find one instance” where it has been necessary to perform an abortion due to the risk to the mother’s life.

In fact, Daily Kos reveals details from a recent study:

The report, titled “Deadly Delivery,” notes that the likelihood of a woman’s dying in childbirth in the U.S. is five times as great as in Greece, four times as great as in Germany and three times as great as in Spain. Every day in the U.S., more than two women die of pregnancy-related causes, with the maternal mortality ratio doubling from 6.6 deaths per 100,000 births in 1987 to 13.3 deaths per 100,000 births in 2006. [...]

Walsh was also defeated in November, losing out to Iraq war veteran and double amputee Tammy Duckworth.

Stephen King out of Iowa. He too shares extreme abortion views, plus he says the Humane Society should step aside and allow dog fighting!

I would suggest the whole governing system at this time needs to be included in the list. I have never been exposed to such finger pointing and childish behaviour on all levels including both parties. No matter which social medial outlet is listened to, people are emotional and passionate defending their point of view. If as a nation we cannot come together on the obvious issues and use common sense, how in heaven's name can we expect the same from our governing officials.

We allow distorted thinking and opinions being presented through various media. I believe if, as a people, we stop accepting the glorifying and repeated close up of horrific acts or odious communications from governing officials, we can reduce a great deal of this madness.

It is a sad commentary on the state of affairs for all. I believe as Americans we can demonstrate together, acceptance of all people regardless of gender, colour, political, economical, health issues and biblical beliefs, 2013 could be the most successful and compassionate year in our history. Sometimes all we need to do is stop and think. No coal in anyones stocking in 2013!
