Top 5 Obama Punches from Debate 2

  • 2 of 5

2.

MS. CROWLEY: Governor, let me ask the president something about what you just said. The governor says that he is not going to allow the top 5 percent — I believe is what he said — to have a tax cut, that it will all even out, that what he wants to do is give that tax cut to the middle class. Settled?

PRESIDENT OBAMA: No, it’s not settled. (Chuckles.) Look, the cost of lowering rates for everybody across the board 20 percent, along with what he also wants to do in terms of eliminating the estate tax, along what he wants to do in terms of corporates changes in the tax code — it costs about $5 trillion. Governor Romney then also wants to spend $2 trillion on additional military programs, even though the military’s not asking for them. That’s $7 trillion. He also wants to continue the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans. That’s another trillion dollars. That’s $8 trillion.

Now, what he says is he’s going to make sure that this doesn’t add to the deficit, and he’s going to cut middle-class taxes. But when he’s asked, how are you going to do it, which deductions, which loopholes are you going to close, he can’t tell you. The — the fact that he only has to pay 14 percent on his taxes when a lot of you are paying much higher — you know, he’s already taken that off the board. Capital gains are going to continue to be at a low rate, so we — we’re not going to get money that way. We haven’t heard from the governor any specifics, beyond Big Bird and eliminating funding for Planned Parenthood, in terms of how he pays for that.

Now, Governor Romney was a very successful investor. If somebody came to you, Governor, with a plan that said, here; I want to spend 7 (trillion dollars) or $8 trillion, and then we’re going to pay for it, but we can’t tell you until maybe after the election how we’re going to do it, you wouldn’t have taken such a sketchy deal. And neither should you, the American people, because the math doesn’t add up.

No failure this time

Obama was criticized by many on the left for failing, in the first debate, to challenge Romney’s facts. There was no failure this time around. After Mitt Romney did his usual dance, claiming that his tax cuts will not cost anything because, hey, just trust him, Obama pointed out exactly what it was that Romney was saying, and made clear how ludicrous it is that Romney expects voters to accept his tax plan on faith, because obviously, a politician would never lie about stuff.

Obama also did something very canny here. He didn’t just bring up Mitt’s plan to balance the budget by firing Big Bird and Jim Lehrer. He also reminded voters that yes, Mitt Romney has come out against funding Planned Parenthood.

Romney has made the most of his gains since the first debate among women. This was a subtle shot directly at those gains. Romney often describes balancing budgets at Bain and during the Salt Lake City Olympics (although he did so at the latter by getting a government bailout). Romney never denied, however, that he intended to gut Planned Parenthood’s funding, because even for Mitt, that would be a flip too far to flop.

Can I point out that the cost of oil and gasoline may have another factor?? Almost everything we use has ingredients made from petroleum in them. Laundry detergent, dryer sheets, cosmetics, shampoo, soap, perfumes, air fresheners, plastics, and probably a heck of a lot more. We are surrounded by the things made from petroleum. And more people are buying and making more of them every day. That is why they want to 'drill, baby, drill' all over the place. Also, if you have a captive market with no real competition, gasoline is going to cost an arm and a leg. That is how capitalism works. If there WERE competition in the industry, you could just buy out the competition or merge with it. Oh, right, they did that already. And all the petroleum and gas CEOs get together in meetings and agree on prices. Capitalists aren't supposed to do that, but they do. Don't you understand now why they demonize regulation and the smallest little hint of social democracy?? Heaven help the rich folks if such a thing were to actually happen!! They might have to live on only 10 or 15 million dollars a year! Tragedy!!

I am a senior, retired, receiving Social Security that I paid into all of my working life. I am on Medicare that I paid into all of my working life, and still pay into each and every month. The payment comes out of my Social Security check automatically. I still pay taxes. So where is it that I am getting something for nothing? At least I pay my fair share of taxes Mr. Romney, unlike you.

Vote republicans out of office in every state at every opportunity. Romney and Ryan are the wrong choice for women, children, the middle class and America.

David, the fact that you refer to the 47%ers just shows how stupid and mean you really are. Some of them are veterans with PTDS, some are elderly who fought to give you the right to flap your gums, some are ill or disabled. Yeah, they're all a bunch of assholes aren't they? Some are college and university grads who can't get more than a McJob because your idols have outsourced to India, Mexico or China. More assholes. It's SO easy to disparage people on line rather than to their faces. You remind me of the prick who threw dollar bills at the disabled man with Parkinsons claiming he was too lazy to work or pay for his own health care. He was a professor, well educated but had spent all his savings trying to regain his health. Another lazy asshole by your definition. My dad suffered from Parkinsons, a dreadful disease, but fortunately was Canadian and well cared for. May some such fate befall you so we can include you in the 47%. Then WE can call you a lazy asshole too.

I just can't believe any female would vote for Romney!! Or anyone who's ever owned a dog. Or anyone with a brain frankly.

So many care 2 posters (47ers) will be sobbing in their children’s laps, when in a few weeks they find out they are no longer entitled to their children and grand children’s hard work.

I just came up with an update to my original post.

"I am not familiar with what I said, but I stand by what I said, whatever it was." - Mitt Romney, May 17, 2012, while speaking to, Sean Hannity.

Maybe he should put everything he said into binders so he could look them up when he needs to. Each statement will have to have additional sections each recording the different things he said about the same thing in different ways at different times, so he can chose the one that he thinks fits best for the moment.

Kudos to Chris C and Kevin B! To John H: If the fact that I'm still voting for President Obama "tell's (sic)..." you that I "...have "sh$t for brain's (sic)," then that's your opinion which you are entitled to. I can accept criticism and still spread hope, as I'm a very optimistic and positive person. If in fact I have "sh$t for brain's (sic)," then that's problematic for me. But I have good news for you. I believe all your spelling/grammar problems can be fixed in 3 easy lessons. And fortunately for you, they're the first 3! However, about the voices in your head that "tell's (sic)....." you things, I'm not sure much can be done about that. Try not listening to Fox News.

Per James M (another hero of mine) who said:
"Even as he was saying "Please proceed, Governor," I was hearing "How much rope would you like to hang yourself, idiot."

ME TOO! That was the best moment in the debate for me!
