Earlier in the week we brought you news of a gay couple from Maine who were voted prom royalty by their senior class, but we have another good news prom story to share today: seniors at McFatter Technical High School, Florida, voted a trans girl their prom queen and a gay guy their prom king, reports Steve Rothaus’ Gay South Florida.
The girl in question, Andii Viveros, aged 17, was birth assigned male but began presenting as female two years ago whereby she began wearing female attire to school.
Andii, who still also uses her birth name Andrew and will reportedly continue to do so until she begins the gender change process to become Andrea, says that she was overwhelmed at the senior class voting for her as prom queen and couldn’t believe it when her name was called out at the prom event last Friday.
Andii’s openess about her gender identity has not come without its troubles, though.
She tells of being bullied a great deal at school. She recounts having the word “faggot” written on her locker and being told that she was making a “mockery” out of prom by attending in female attire.
The previous school administration asked Andii to “tone it down” when she began wearing female attire to school, but the new principal is, Andii says, more supportive and denied attempts made by a group of students to remove her from the ballot.
According to the GSFLA article Andii enjoys the support of her parents. Her father, Oscar Viveros, 46, bought Andii her prom gown, shoes and makeup and says that, though he had tried to reinforce Andii’s birth-assigned gender in the past, he and his wife now accept Andii as a straight female.
He has this advice for parents: “Let them grow to be whatever they want to be, as long as they’re good. Let them blossom into whatever they want to be. Support them 100 percent.”
Seniors also chose to crown self-identifying gay 17-year old Juan Macias as their prom king.
