Vegan cuisine and the backyard cookout are not thing we usually mention in the same sentence. With more people embracing the completely meat and dairy free lifestyle, however, it becomes important to plan a few vegan-friendly dishes for your 4th of July celebration.
Here are 4 of the easiest, most cookout-appropriate vegan dishes we could find. All are big on flavor, and low on time spent in a hot kitchen. You might be surprised to find your steak-loving friends asking you for the recipe!
The “Best Ever” Black Bean Burgers
No backyard BBQ is complete without a burger. Veggie burger recipes are a dime a dozen, yet most are dry and flavorless. This recipe was created (and devoured) by someone who typically loves a juicy, dripping hamburger, so that’s saying something. Just mix black beans, quinoa, and a few veggies and seasonings into this patty mix, and all your guests will be begging for a second helping.

+ add your ownMade up the mixture but I didn't have time for the shape patties and chill in the frig step so I cooked some in a dish in the oven, with breadcrumbs on top. (I added a sprinkling of grated cheese). There was some left, so I used it to stuff halved peppers next day. Yes. It was very good.
Delicious recipes, will definitely try them!
Thanks for the great recipes!
Steve R. - Whether you are liberal or conservative, American or Brit, celebrate holidays or not, animals experience fear, pain and suffering. We can make choices to avoid inflicting some of that suffering.
Jamie C. - I had steak once when I was a kid, and I agree - it was delicious. Then I found out how the steak became a steak. Gross. Unethical.
These recipes sound so good!
Will try them.
Thank You!

Well - I would have tried a "vegan fourth of July" - but I celebrate "Independence Day" - not the "fourth of July".
I also celebrate "Christmas Day" - not the "25th of December", and "New Years Day" - not the "first of January".
What's the problem with calling it what it is? "Independence Day" - the day we rid ourselves of oppressive British rule?
I guess it's too patriotic for the liberal left..... too "American".....
Very useful post!!
Those black bean veggie burgers look awesome. What could be better (and healthier) than quinoa and black beans as the basis for your burger? Yum!
thanks
