We’ve done a lot of work at Care2 trying to curb the effects of climate change. We know that every day counts. Even if people in Washington don’t see the rush, those of us who’ve sweltered in summer heatwaves, endured strong tropical storms and suffered through this extreme winter know that ignoring climate change doesn’t make it go away.
Sadly, the only thing that seems to be happening on climate change in Washington these days are attacks on its regulation and existence. Already, two potentially devastating bills have been introduced by pro-polluter senators that would stymie our ability to fight global warming at all.
TAKE ACTION: Oppose Senate Attacks on the Clean Air Act!
Senator John Barrasso (R-Wy.) is leading the attack on the EPA’s authority to regulate climate pollution under the Clean Air Act — the only tool we currently have to fight climate change. His bill would ban not just the EPA, but every other federal agency from regulating climate pollution.
A sneakier attack has come from the Democratic Senator John Rockefeller (W.V.) a notorious coal-state legislator. He reintroduced a bill he proposed last year that would delay the EPA’s rules on big polluters like power plants and other industrial sources for two years. As the New York Times put it in their Feb. 5 editorial, “That is just obstruction by another name…History shows that regulatory delays have a way of becoming permanent.” According to the Times, a half dozen similarly pro-polluter measures are in circulation.
Our friends at the Environmental Defense Fund are fighting back to make sure the EPA can take action protect our health and clear our air. Join the fight and sign their petition to oppose Barrasso’s “Do ABSOLUTELY Nothing on Climate” Bill and the pro-polluter agenda in Congress.
