President Obama will be conducting a Facebook Town Hall today, Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at 1:45 Pacific Time, 4:45 Eastern Time.
The topic for the event is stated as “the tough choices we must all make in order to put our economy on a more responsible fiscal path, while still investing in areas like innovation that will help our economy grow and make America more competitive.”
Many people seem to leap right over this idea to the polar positions for and against the various programs at stake. Republicans want to cut government spending and eliminate programs. Democrats often seem to want to defend spending and the programs funded regardless of cost.
President Obama has maintained a position which commits to government as a solution to some of society’s challenges. The President is committed to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and health care reforms passed during his administration as well as government regulation of the environment and support for public education. However, the President is not defending government spending beyond what he believes can be matched by tax revenue.
The President will try to make the case that raising taxes on upper income Americans is part of the solution. Changes in the tax code for corporations are also part of the President’s new proposals. The stakes are high and both the presidential election and the 2012 congressional elections will decide the direction of the nation on these issues.
How will the President convince the American public?
