Who Are the 99 Percent? Story #19

I am a college student on full scholarship.† Thanks, NJ but next year Iím on my own.† Too bad Iím carless and 3 hours away from home, so I canít commute or even find a local job.†† Forget on-campus jobs Ė theyíre only given to upperclassmen, or those without a scholarship.† Too bad my dad has awful credit and canít help me, pay the mortgage or the bills.† He wanted to take this weekend off to visit me, since I havenít been home in over two months, for college family honors day, and his boss said, ďYou come in and keep your job or visit your daughter and lose it.Ē

We are the 99% !

nancy l, apparently i need to repeat myself: students who receive full ride scholarships, the normal university/college policy is if the student finds work off of campus property, then the university/college will revoke the scholarship, meaning cancel the scholarship, meaning bye bye scholarship. the university/college is of the opinion that if the student starts working, then they no longer need the scholarship. in other words, she is not allowed to work off campus. so idea of want ad jobs is a moot point. give thousands of dollars in scholarship for a $7.75 part time job? i can see your critical thinking skills are sorely lacking.

When you decide to be bitchy about the people of other countries, you should travel there first, or at least ask a friend for info, that you obviously need.

@ Christina B. You sure as hell are not American! Fancy asking a question as stupid as yours!
When I grew up in the UK, there was a bus going somewhere, passing the front door of our shop every 5-10 minutes. I could walk down a short hill to the small train station, in order to go a few miles to a larger town for school clothes etc.
More than 30 years ago, the small station closed while Britain was experiencing a mild recession, and the buses became less frequent.
I don't know how it is now, but where my brother lives, there is one country bus a day, going into town, and one coming home, and the train station that's still open is a taxi ride away.
That is still more civilized than ........"(Pat Buchanan et al) The GREATEST COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!) Where I live in southern PA, no bus, no train and without a car, which we have been saving up to repair for almost a year, no way out, without my partner, when he's not working, or if a friend with wheels, wants my company.
I used to walk into my town, over 3 miles, but at 70 years old, it's not so easy. the young woman could probably walk too, but nowadays, it can be very dangerous to be a woman alone.

I see you are from Athens. I have been there many times, and in fact my daughter went to school there. There are not only your buses and trains but very cheap taxis. Also many interesting parts of Athens are within walking distance of Syntagma.

@ Nancy L: there are more than four job seekers for every job opening and many employers refuse to accept applications from anyone who is unemployed. In light of this,do those you who respond to this young woman's plight by pointing the fingers of blame at her feel proud of your cold heartedness?

I'm very sad to read this story. I too was a scholarship student, but often I could get up to three part time jobs while studying and a full time job in the holidays.
Some of the comments on this thread show that people are out of touch. For instance, advising her to get a second hand car.... as if she were not clever enough to work that one out. Maybe that person 9Rob D.) should try to live and study under conditions where he could not afford a used, old car.
Good on her. I wish her well.

If you want to complain look at the rotters at the very top and do something about them, Don't get me wrong, it is not the Jews as such. Who are they that have the world by the balls. Well its the reptilian ZIONIST Families who have amasssed a staggering 140,thousand trillion in wealth and keep feeding their insatiable lust for money and power. Most people can't even imagine such a large amount owned by so few, such as the Rockefellars the Rothschild, Soros Oppenheimers ,It is beyond their comprehension. Let me put it this way that with 7 billion people in the world if every human person now alive were to get an equal share of that stolen wealth everyone would be a multi millionaire. Do the maths if you can .It's a 14 with 16 noughts, that is 20,million each. Can you now see why it is that those Elite criminals don't want you know how much they have stolen and want to exterminate you claiming there are too many people in the world. They are afraid that we will all find them out and their life wont be worth living.when we do. If they are so concerned about overpopulation and global warming and terrorism diseasse, starvation and all the other fraudulent claims they make, why don't they volunteer to be the fisrt to self destruct it would be a real blessing for us all.

Steve R said,

"So - be happy you had a full scholarship - most don't - quit griping, quit trying to make people feel sorry for you and go make a plan for your life. The government isn't going to do it for you - nor is the 1%!"

So true. So where does that leave someone that does not have the financial ability or intelligence to "make a plan" as you put it?

I guess it is "Let them eat cake." Right?

Spread the protest.

Corporations have over-powered our government which now believes that out-sourcing and off-shoring of U.S. jobs is inevitable and necessary with expectations that the middle class should fall on their swords. It is the underlying cause of the financial collapse and borders on national security with the loss of our middle class tax base. Yet, this nation does nothing, not even demand it be restricted by whatever method. International businesses are doing the UN-AMERICAN activity of destroying U.S. salaries, U.S. businesses that hire in the U.S., and as an end result, destroying the U.S. marketplace while still demanding BUSINESS ENTITLEMENTS and protections for themselves.

Infrastructure spending and tax breaks will not replace enough jobs to keep up with the hemorrhaging loss of U.S. jobs from out-sourcing over seas. Neither party will do anything about it unless we begin grass roots efforts to protest out-sourcing and off-shoring of U.S. jobs. If nothing is done we will deserve what we get and it will get a lot worse before it gets better.

Yet another sad but true story.

one more thing bob, every working person pays state, local and sales taxes (unless you live in a state with no state tax, jersey isn't one of them), that is a republiCON lie that 47% of working americans pay NO TAXES so don't be so damn pompus about only the 53% paying for her state scholarship, every working person and every consumer in new jersey contributed to her scholarship.
