Wisconsin Votes For Abstinence-Only Education, Against Insurance Covering Abortions

Wisconsin Votes For Abstinence-Only Education, Against Insurance Covering Abortions

Early Wednesday morning Wisconsin lawmakers voted to overturn the Health Youth Act and to ban private insurance plans from covering abortion. And so the war on women marches on.

The Healthy Youth Act required that all sexual education classes taught in Wisconsin schools be medically-accurate, age appropriate, and use evidence-based strategies to reduce teen pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections. Instead, Wisconsin youth will be subject to abstinence-only or abstinence-centered sex education and will require schools apply for federal funds for abstinence programming.

The insurance ban passed will eliminate coverage for abortion services in Wisconsin even if a woman is using her own dollars to buy private insurance. The insurance ban will affect private insurance plans operating in the state exchange set up under the Affordable Care Act.

Republicans in the state insist these measures are not designed to punish women but instead re-assert “local control” over such things as insurance plans and sex education. So much like “states rights” is code for resisting desegregation and affirmative action, “local control” is now code for embracing a theocratic approach to statewide governance.

hmm 'abstinence only'??? what, did the lawmakers forget they too were teenagers? abstinence should be taught but so should how to take care of your sexual desires safely. everyone has a 'choice' they make (except in the case of rape) and all options should be presented. pro-choice for women should, in my opinion, be legally acceptable. no one has the right to tell 'me' that I can't do something with my body. there are way more than enough unwanted children worldwide to cause the births of yet MORE unwanted babies. until the 'anti-abortion' and/or 'anti-choice' people can figure out how to care for all the homeless children, they need to shut up and leave individuals their CHOICE in what to do.

and after all these women accidently get pregnant and all these kids are born i bet Wisconsin's next step will be to cut funding to its welfare progarms, just to further screw over women and the next generation.

What a pitiful attitude to have towards sex. Whatever, I'm sure others have said it here but people do deserve the government they elect. If it screws them over, they screwed themselves over with their own stupidity. On the other hand nature and animals don't deserve to suffer because of people's idiotic decisions, but they do suffer anyway.

"The insurance ban passed will eliminate coverage for abortion services in Wisconsin even if a woman is using her own dollars to buy private insurance"
Where is the outrage that government is interfering with private industry, such as the outrage when the Affordable Care Act required contraceptive coverage as interfering with the private insurance industry? But, of course we know it was never about interfering with private industry.

Silly me I thought the US constitution forbade religion from secular matters and yet here is Wisconsin allowing the Catholic faith to run its legislature. Surely this bill violates the constitution and must be overturned in a higher court. In the meantime women need to force schools to provide proper sex education.

It never fails to amaze me that the same people who whine about spending money to take proper care of our mothers & children, fight so hard to produce the very circumstances which create more hardship & need !

Abstinence-only sex education has NEVER worked.

I find it utterly fascinating that the rightwingnuts trumpet "LOCAL CONTROL!!!" to the heavens when it is something like restricting reproductive rights for women (and really, what could possibly be MORE "local" than a person's right to control what happens to her own body?)

But then when a huge corporation wants to steal their land via eminent domain to frack wells (and poison their water with the fracking chemicals and pollute their air with released gasses), or run a pipeline that WILL spill roughly once a month full of highly toxic liquified tar across it...and local communities put up zoning ordinances forbidding fracking or the pipeline...then SUDDENLY, out of nowhere, the rightwingnuts are all LIVID about these local communities DARING to exert LOCAL CONTROL!!!!!11111!!!!!!

Oh, and don't forget, if you have an unwanted baby, just dump it off at your local hospital. Let them take care of it.
