Yoest: Promoting Contraception is “Carrying Water on the Other Side” [VIDEO]

In case there was any doubt that the anti-choice activists are just as interested in you losing access to contraception as they are in you losing access to abortion, watch the following video with Charmain Yoest, President of Americans United for Life, who explains that anti-abortion groups can’t promote birth control because they don’t want to be seen as working with reproductive health groups.

I'm not really surprised, yet this belies their arguments -- why wouldn't they want to help women not to get pregnant?, thereby helping to decrease abortions? They have an agenda for women, and it doesn't involve women thinking for themselves.

@ Bibi, look I don't like the idea of "demand abortion," but I am a man not the women who is carrying a child. There are many things I don't agree with, but have to tolerate. No one person controls everything, those who have tried did much damage before they were either overthrown or committed suicide. I hate war, but can do nothing, I must tolerate it, I don't like tax loopholes that allow the rich to "legally" evade taxes. I can't stand bigotry against any group of people whether it be race, color, creed, sexual orientation, sex, political view, or wealth. All humans are of the same species. If a women has a legitimate reason for abortion, so be it.
If abortion is the lessor of 2 evils, then so be it.

Heather - I appreciate the lecture for what it is.

Addendum: I also wanted to state for the record that I am NOT anti-adoption and there are many, MANY happy adoption stories out there. But the bad ones either get swept under the rug, hidden from view, or else end up on the news. Just as with abortion, all sides of the adoption option MUST be made available and open. Ideally, a woman should always make the best informed choice possible, and that means facts, not rhetoric.

Wow, Bibi, you live in your own little world, don't you. Every time a person makes a choice, there is the potential for regret. You cite anacdata from "personal" experiences about women who have regretted having abortions and one adopting her child out to her sister.

That's well and good. I'd rather, however, regret not bringing a child into this world than regret bringing a child into it. Most women I know who have had abortions, myself included, regret the circumstances that made an abortion a needful choice, but not the abortion itself. Those circumstances include but are not limited to, rape, birth control failure, a poor decision, maternal danger and poor fetal prognosis.

And for every "perfect, delightful" adoption, I can introduce you to an adoptee whose adopted parents either outright sucked, or were great parents, but these children still felt rejected and disposed of. Ditto mothers who gave their children up for adoption. Adoption is advertised as being built on love, and that's a great sentiment, but the fact is adoption is based on trauma and loss.

You were correct for exactly one statement and I quote "You never know." But it doesn't mean what I think you think it means, not really.

Jamie - History is filled with persons that we might wish were not born, others that were, and we are glad. There is no way to pick and choose Its a question of whether history makes the men or men make the history. You could argue that forever and there is no answer.

I think what you are seeing on the abortion front is a lot of very radical legislation by the Republicans. They are aware that they will never in a million years get all that they have put in the legislation, and there is a 50/50 chance they would not want it anyway. Its legislation designed for judicial review and by design in tests the boundaries of what is possible. It will take years to resolve. Not something to be taken lightly, but not anything that can be taken very seriously at this time.

The world would have been better off is Hitler, Stalin and several other monsters had been aborted.

1:18PM PDT on Jun 29, 2011

Bibi You haven't been paying attention to the media the anti-abortion crowd right now is trying to pass laws in several states to launch an investigation into every miscarriage. Because every lump of jelly fetus must be saved, but only until it is born then the baby can starve to death because it does not deserve and entitlement program to keep it alive.

1:18PM PDT on Jun 29, 2011

William - Lots of things happen that can not be predicted and that is one of the big reasons I do not support on demand abortion. I am much more inclined to let nature take its course. Lots of modern people don't like that because they want to believe they are in control of their destinies. That is an illusion. An unexpected child may turn out to be the blessing of a lifetime.

I know three women who had abortions (more than one) in their 20s and 30s. They never got pregnant again. They live with regret and an unfillable vacancy that a career has never filled. I know another whose best friend and most beloved is the daughter she wanted to destroy because she believed a birth was too inconvenient. I know another woman who wanted an abortion but had the child and it was adopted by her sister who it turned out could not have children of her own.

You never know.

@ Bibi, that was not a hypothetical situation, It was one of my postal customer families. She never got an abortion, didn't need to, she miscarried, when a local thug, threw her down a flight of stairs, when she tried to protect one of her children the thug was trying to rape.
