One teenage girl is dead with head injuries and another has been hospitalized in serious but stable condition after both were found shot in the head on Saturday. Nineteen-year-old Mollie Judith Olgin was found dead and 18-year-old Mary Christine Chapa seriously wounded; the two young women had been in a relationship for five months. Visitors found Olgin and Chapa in a Portland park in southern Texas; Chapa was rushed to a hospital and is still there, says local NBC affiliate kristv.com.
Portland Police Chief Randy Wright told kristv.com that “we understood from their friends that they were (in a romantic relationship). I know from … Mollie’s parents that they were very close.”
MSNBC asked Wright if the girls’ sexuality had anything to do with the shootings; the police chief responded “That’s always something that we’re looking for, but as of this point, we have not been able to establish that that had anything to do with the attack.” Noting that police had not yet been able to gather enough information yet to identify a suspect, Wright added “It appears as if … this was not just a random attack but that’s something that we really have to develop over time.”
Police had recovered bullet casings from a large-caliber gun near the site which MSNBC describes as a “nature area with some parts overgrown and no lights.” The Corpus Christi Caller Times reports that a resident heard two loud bangs on Friday night and thought they were firecrackers. The area where Olgin and Chapa were found was, in Wright’s words, near a “scenic overlook with a wooden deck,” at the end of which is a “very steep incline into a grassy area that leads down to the shoreline.”
Both Olgin’s and Chapa’s families are “devastated,” says the Corpus Christi Caller Times. Olgin’s roommate, Samantha Garrett, told kristv.com that the couple was ”fun-loving” and “hadn’t gotten any negative responses to their relationship and could not think of why anyone would want to harm them.”
MSNBC says that the last homicide in Portland occurred two years ago. The town, described as a “bedroom community of Corpus Christi on the Gulf of Mexico,” has a low crime rate. But based on the horrific shootings of Olgin and Chapa, it is not a safe place for everyone.

+ add your ownA murder is a murder----the reasons shouldn't matter unless you can show that it is a hate crime, because then the SOB who did it is likely to become a serial killer and needs to be put away for ever...to the families--we mourn with you....
This is too tragic to hear. I know that most people do not like to assume this, but this is most likely a hate crime.
What a horrible hate crime. It cannot be seen as anything else. It is an outrage!
Justice now for the murdered victims. I ask all to write to the Portland Police Chief Randy Wright to urge proper handling of the case. The world is watching.

Sympathies go out to their families and friends.
No matter what your orientation, no one deserves to be murdered!
Ok, let me say this, I don't approve of the gay life either, but whom is anyone, to take into their own hands, justice served to people who live a different life style? It is not our anyone's place to chastise others. Who are you to judge? Are you prefect, righteous, innocent of all and everything? Whoever you are, if you're reading this, justice will come to you down the road. You took someones daughters life, a sisters life, U TOOK A LIFE, and just to remind you, this is Gods business; God is the one anyone thats not in obedience with his word will answer too. You will reap what you sowed trust me, at one point down the road, it will come back double fold. Meantime, youre out there to kill again which is very sad. You KILLER, might as well pack your bags and head for the hills because justice will be served on you by God and man if you're ever caught. Your day is coming and you will remember what you did to those girls in the field.
Keep investigating...this is a small Texas town and hopefully the culprits will be prosecuted and the murders are not swept under the rug.
I am hoping this is pursued, not ignored like a certain Texas Sheriff would. No matter why this happened it was horrible and hope they get those killers and keep them in jail for a very very long time.
My heart goes out to their families and friends,
Maybe there is some truth to that saying, "Don't mess with Texas."
Unless we are personally involved no one has the right to say or do anything to how we want to live our lives.
This is a terrible crime. I hope whomever did this is caught.
