about the seal hunt
Each year, hundreds of thousands of baby harp seals are slaughtered on the ice fields off Canada's east coast for their pelts. Over 95% of the seals killed during this hunt are just days or weeks old.
about the International Fund for Animal Welfare
From its founding, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has drawn international attention to the plight of the seal pups and successfully rallied worldwide condemnation of the hunt. Thanks to IFAW's continued vigilance, it is now illegal to hunt whitecoat seal pups for commercial purposes on the ice floes off Canada's east coast. This is a fragile victory, however, for Canada's commercial seal hunt persists. IFAW continues to document and expose abuses of the commercial hunt and press for an end to this cruel, unsustainable slaughter.
Over the years, the small team of committed campaigners reaching out to help seals has grown to become the world's leading international animal welfare organization. IFAW begins its fourth decade of operation with more than 200 experienced campaigners, legal and political experts, and internationally acclaimed scientists working from offices in 17 countries around the world.
how your clicks turn into donations
Our advertisers sponsor this site and make your donations to IFAW possible. 100% of the donations generated by this click-to-donate go to IFAW. Contributions are funded by sponsors who have agreed to pay to be featured on this click-to-donate. If during a period there are no paying sponsors, Care2 has guaranteed to make a donation of at least $1/CPM. No matter what, every time you click, (up to once per day) you will be generating a donation to support IFAW.
Care2 pools all of the daily donations and delivers these funds to IFAW on a regular basis.
how your click helps seals
IFAW documents hundreds of examples of seal hunt cruelty each year, from seals being hooked and dragged across the ice while still alive for skinning, to others being shot in the water and dragged by hooks on to the ice, with no attempt made to check for consciousness. By exposing the shocking cruelty of the hunt, IFAW is generating global support for a ban of seal products and an end to Canada's commercial seal hunt.
Your clicks make it possible for IFAW seal hunt observers to continue documenting the cruelty of the hunt, and to keep fighting to ensure we pass historic legislation to ban seal products and end the hunt worldwide.
In fact, in July 2009, the Council of the European Union adopted a regulation to ban the sale of all seal products in the EU. Learn more about this victory here.
