Meet Deborah Davis
kind of work / accomplishments have done in the artworld?
Although I am not a working artist , I have used art to enhance my life and those around me. I have just completed a children's book , The Magical Rainforest : A Journey of Fact and Fancy , which I also illustrated . It is presently awaiting to be published. Many of my paintings have been sold in the private sector.
Have you won any awards for your artwork?
I haven't entered any competitions !!
Why the interest in your preferred subject area?
Much of my artwork is about rainforests , animals, the environment and indigenous peoples. I have a great passion and infinity to rainforests and have had the fortune of visiting many . It is interesting that this site , Care2 , saves rainforests. I spearheaded a rainforest fund raiser in my school for 7 years under the auspices of the Nature Conservancy, Earth's Birthday Project, Adopt an Acre. My spiritual connection to indigenous people , particularly the Mayans, is very powerful and I love painting symbolic canvases of them.
How many years have you been pursuing art?
I've been pursuing since my little baby fingers held a crayon !! There hasn't been a time in my life when I haven't created something. Without it, I feel as though a part of me is missing .
Has anyone been a particular inspiration to you in pursuing art?
My entire family is artistic in some form or another . My mother is a classical pianist ; my sister an artist ; my uncle an artist ; I was a dancer ,and so on. I grew up with all of the arts and they have become part of my collective consciousness .
Do you do this full time, and if not, what else do you do?
I am a full -time Special Ed teacher in South Jamaica ,Queens, New York. In my spare time , I play the "surdo," a huge bass drum in a Brazilian Samba Group based in New York City called "Manhattan Samba." The rest of my time ( there's not too much left ) is spent with my art and my 10 year old squirrel monkey , Chippy , whom I've had since I rescued him at 6 weeks old !
What are your goals for your artwork?
At this point in my life, I am actively committed to pursue my second career in art. Painting was my original media of expression ; one which I love and will continue to do. My paintings are a personal and social statement , particularly about the Earth and her people. I think that the direction I am going in is writing and illustrating children's books. Of course, I would love to make money doing it , but witout compromising my beliefs or priorities . I really want to reach children with a truly postitive and enlightening message about animals and the environment. My latest endeavor is writing and illustrating my series, Chippy and Friends.Com. It is about four monkeys ( mine included) who write to each other on the internet ! It is very funny and filled with the charm and charisma of each monkey !
Did you ever have any formal training in art?
No !! I've avoided this because I want to produce what comes from within. If I need technical help , I ask my sister.
What is the most compelling reason someone would want to visit your
Gee...I don't want to brag !! I just want people to enjoy my work and feel uplifted by it.
