To Secretary Tommy Thompson:
I'm writing to urge the U.S. government to sign the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control, the recently completed tobacco control treaty. I thank you and the United States Government recent decision to allow the FCTC to be voted on by the World Health Assembly.
Tobacco use already kills more than four million people a year around the world, and that number is projected to increase to 10 million a year by the year 2020 with 70 percent of those deaths in developing countries. This is a horrible tragedy that the treaty can help to reduce if it is widely adopted and effectively implemented by countries. By signing this treaty, the United States can continue to be a leader in improving health and saving lives around the world.
Many provisions of the treaty reflect the best recommendations of the United States’ own scientific experts and studies. These policies include a comprehensive ban on tobacco advertising (with an exception for nations with constitutional constraints), large health warning labels, secondhand smoke protections, increased tobacco taxes, anti-smuggling measures, regulation of tobacco products, public education, and help for smokers who want to quit.
Thank you for considering my comments. I look forward to your response to this important issue.
Sincerely,
