Let retailers know you won’t buy farmed salmon!

Farmed Salmon Could Pose Health Risks - Pledge Not to Buy It!

A study released in the respected journal Science on January 9th, 2004 found that, in most cases, consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks, according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for determining safe fish consumption levels.

The study established that concentrations of several contaminants such as PCBs and Dioxins, which are associated with serious health risks ranging from neurological effects to cancer, are significantly higher in farmed salmon than in wild salmon.

Tell retailers you won’t buy farmed salmon until these reported concerns have been met!
As your customer, I look to you and trust that you will supply me with healthy and sustainable foodstuffs – products that I can feel good about buying. Upon learning about the salmon farming industry and its various reported health and environmental impacts, I was concerned to learn that you have been selling this product.

According to a major study published in the respected journal Science farmed salmon should be consumed only in limited amounts. The study revealed that in most cases, consuming more than one serving of farmed salmon per month could pose unacceptable cancer risks, according to United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standards for determining safe fish consumption levels. The study also established that farmed salmon contain up to 10 times the level of dangerous chemicals found in wild Pacific salmon. The contaminants include PCBs, dioxins and two banned pesticides. PCBs and dioxins are potent toxins that are associated with cancer and damage to neurological systems in humans.

Salmon has long been promoted as a health food item; however according to this recent study, there could be health risks associated with eating this product. As a result of this recent study I urge you to act in the best interest of your customers and take this product off your shelves.

I will not be buying this product from you until the many reported health and environmental problems have been solved. Instead of selling farmed salmon, please offer healthy sustainable alternatives such as wild salmon or halibut.

I will only purchase farmed salmon from companies that use farming practices and technology that:
Eliminate the risk of disease transfer to wild fish and escapes of salmon into the wild; Prevent fish farm waste from being released into the ocean; Label all farmed fish so consumers can make informed choices; Use fish feed that does not result in a global loss of seafood for human consumption; Use fish feed that does not result in unsafe levels of contaminates in farmed salmon; Ensure that wildlife is not harmed as a result of fish farming; prohibit the use of genetically modified fish; eliminate the use of antibiotics, biocides and harmful chemicals in fish farming; respect the views of coastal residents and do not locate farms where First Nations or other communities object.

Finally, I ask that farmed salmon always be labeled as such so that consumers can make an informed choice. Until such a time I can assure you that I will think twice when visiting your seafood counter.

Sincerely,
