Restore Scientific Integrity!

TOP SCIENTISTS CONCERNED ABOUT SCIENTIFIC INTEGRITY!
On February 18, 2004, over 60 leading scientists --Nobel laureates, leading medical experts, former federal agency directors, and university chairs and presidents -- voiced their concern over the Bush Administration's systematic misuse of science.

Across a broad range of issues-- from childhood lead poisoning and mercury emissions to climate change, reproductive health, and nuclear weapons -- the Bush administration has consistently distorted and censored scientific findings in an effort to further its political agenda!

A special report (see report) finds evidence that the Bush administration has:
  • Suppressed and distorted scientific analysis to create the appearance that science supports its policies.
  • Undermined the independence of science advisory panels by subjecting panel nominees to political litmus tests and by nominating non-experts or underqualified individuals with industry ties.
  • Disbanded scientific panels whose advice conflicted with Bush administration policies.
  • The integrity of scientific study is critical to those who rely on government information to inform policy decisions and to the American public who depends on the governement to protect their health and safety. Join America's leading scientists, and voice your opposition as well!

SIGN THE PETITION BELOW and call for legislative and regulatory action to restore scientific integrity to federal policymaking.

    Dear Senator,

As your constituent, I am very concerned that policies about public health, safety, and the environment be informed by the best possible science. For this reason, I urge you to ask Senator Collins of Maine, Chair of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, and Senator McCain of Arizona, Chair of the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation committee, to hold oversight hearings on the current administration’s manipulation, suppression, and distortion of science.

The United States has an impressive history of investing in the capabilities and respecting the independence of scientists. This legacy has brought us sustained economic progress, science-based public health policy, and unequaled scientific leadership within the global community. Unfortunately, according to appointees of past Republican administrations and senior scientists who have advised administrations of both parties, this legacy is being threatened by the Bush administration’s abuse of science in a broad and unprecedented manner.

Across a broad range of issues—from childhood lead poisoning and mercury emissions to climate change, reproductive health, and nuclear weapons—the scientific community has brought forth numerous examples of serious and troubling scientific abuse. Scientists charge that government data analysis is being suppressed and manipulated distorted
to align results with predetermined political decisions and that members
of independent scientific advisory panels are being chosen based on
ideology and industry ties rather than expertise.

These serious charges demand Congressional investigation and oversight. Please ask Senators McCain and Collins, as Chairs of the relevant Committees, to hold hearings on this critical issue to ensure that scientific integrity is restored to policy making.

    Sincerely,
    The Undersigned
