Protect Health Insurance Incentives for Employers

President Bush is considering eliminating the business tax deduction for employer-provided health insurance. Why would the President take away this important tax incentive for health insurance for working people? Unfortunately, it's so that he can pay for more tax breaks for the wealthy.

The Washington Post recently reported that the Bush administration is considering "simplifying" the tax code by dramatically cutting and possibly eliminating taxes on savings and investments, including capital gains (Read the article - opens in a new window). The tax code probably could use some cleaning-up. but it is short-sighted and wrong to eliminate a major tax incentive for workers' health insurance simply to give the wealthy more tax breaks. ALL Americans deserve quality, affordable health care!

There are 45 million uninsured people in America - 8.5 million of the uninsured are children. In the one minute it will take you to sign this petition, five more people will lose their health insurance in the U.S.

Please act today. Let President Bush know that you do not want the tax code simplified at the expense of working people. Urge the President to develop a real plan for both the health care crisis and the tax code, and to not eliminate the tax incentive for employer-provided health insurance.
Dear President Bush -

I am writing to express my concern over your proposal to eliminate the tax deduction for employer-provided health insurance to pay for tax code simplifications. While I understand the need to encourage economic growth, I do not want to see working people lose their health insurance simply to give more tax breaks to wealthy Americans.

I would like to see strong proposals from your administration to both guarantee quality, affordable health care for all Americans and to encourage strong economic growth. These two goals are not mutually exclusive.

There are 45 million uninsured people in America - 8.5 million of the uninsured are children. There is a very real health care crisis in our country. But eliminating tax incentives for businesses that provide insurance to their employees does nothing to address this crisis.

Please keep the tax deduction for employer-provided health insurance in place until we have true healthcare reform that ensures quality, affordable health care for all Americans, not just the wealthy few.

Thank you for considering my comments,
