Turn Africa's Natural Resources Curse Into a Blessing

  • by: ONE (OLD)

Too often African countries rich in natural resources -- such as oil, gas, diamonds and other extractive resources -- are plagued by instability, corruption and inequality.

The first step to ensuring these resources are a blessing and not a curse is transparency -- we need all companies to disclose exactly how much they pay governments for the right to extract natural resources. Armed with such useful information, citizens are then able to hold their governments to account.

Momentum is building this year to get this information made public, and a statement of support by the UK Chancellor would significantly increase chances of these laws spreading across the EU.

Tell UK Chancellor George Osborne to make a public statement in support of EU laws requiring oil, gas and other extractive companies to declare how much they're paying developing country governments.
Dear Chancellor Osborne:

Please make a public statement in support of laws across the EU that will require big oil, gas and other extractive companies to declare exactly how much they are paying developing country governments.
