Support FDA Approval for Emergency Contraception Without a Prescription!

Soon the FDA could give women a second chance to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

Make sure the FDA makes Emergency Contraception available over-the-counter to give all women access to the drug when they need it most. Greater availability of Emergency Contraception, also known as the "morning after pill," will give up to three million women every year a second chance to prevent unplanned pregnancy and avoid abortion!

What is it and how does it work? Emergency Contraception is a back-up method of birth control, a way to prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure. It is a higher dose of the regular birth control pill. It does not induce abortion. In fact, it doesn't work if a woman is already pregnant. The morning after pill has been safely used by women around the world for over 30 years.

Why is non-prescription availability important? It is costly, time-consuming, and difficult to visit a doctor within the brief 72-hour window needed to prevent pregnancy. And there are many times-- holidays and vacations -- when access to a prescribing physician is all but impossible.

It is time for a change that will improve choices for women! Make Emergency Contraception readily accessible to women when they need it... not several days too late.

Sign now and urge the FDA to approve over-the-counter availability of Emergency Contraception!
Dear FDA Commissioner Mark McClellan

I'm writing to urge you to ensure that the FDA will base its upcoming
decision about whether to make emergency contraceptive pills available
over-the-counter on science, not politics.

Studies have shown that this product is extremely safe and easy to use.
Women do not need a health care professional to tell them when they need
it. And because emergency contraception is more effective when used
sooner, the delay caused by the need to get and fill a prescription,
actually diminishes the product's effectiveness.

Emergency contraceptive pills help women to avoid unintended pregnancy.
The FDA has the opportunity to expand women's timely access to emergency
contraception by making a science-based decision to switch it to
over-the-counter status.
