Australians use 3.92 billion plastic bags a year and around 10 million new bags every day. An estimated 3.76 billion bags or 20,700 tonnes of plastic are disposed of in landfill sites throughout Australia every year.
It is estimated that around 50 million bags enter the Australian litter stream every year, causing significant environmental damage and risks to our native fauna. Marine life and wildlife like sea turtles are also at risk of death. Only a ban on single use plastic bags at retail outlets can curb the number of plastic bags.
The Greens have a bill in NSW Parliament that would ban single use plastic bags, in line with what is currently the law in South Australia, the Northern Territory, the ACT and Tasmania. I urge you to support it by signing this petition and spreading the word!
