Mothers matter. When a mother dies, her family breaks apart -- her children are less likely to go to school, get life-saving immunizations and eat well. A child without a mother is 10 times more likely to die in childhood. But it doesn't have to be that way.

Maternal mortality is nothing short of an epidemic. One woman dies from complications during pregnancy or childbirth every minute of every day. This is not because the health community doesn't know how to save them. Nearly all these women die because the world is failing to help.

When all mothers have proper care -- quality emergency care, immediate postpartum care for mothers and newborns, voluntary family planning services -- children, families, communities and nations can thrive. CARE is working, every day, to ensure this happens.
