Repeal the CA Death Penalty: Support Senate Bill 490

The death penalty was reinstated in California in 1978. Since then it has proven to be both costly and grossly ineffective. Senate Bill 490, which will be voted on by the Assembly Appropriations Committee mid-August , offers a solution to this problem.

Since its reinstatement, the death penalty has cost the state of California $4 billion. Annually, the state spends $184 million on death penalty proceedings. During an economic crisis, it's shocking to think that this money, which could be used to keep schools open and better the job market, is going to executing people.

Senate Bill 490 proposes doing away with the death penalty in favor of life without parole sentences. This type of sentence is less costly and more accurately represents what most death row inmates effectively receive.

Support California's economy by directing funds where they can best serve the state, and not be wasted. Tell the California legislature to pass Senate Bill 490.
California has wasted millions of dollars on capital punishment, and stands to waste billions. With the economy in the state that it is in, this type of spending is no longer affordable or wise.

Annually the death penalty costs the state $184 million dollars. That's money that could be better used to fund schools and support the job market. Furthermore, inmates rarely see execution as it takes an average of 25 years for an inmate to be killed after being sentenced.

At this point in time the death penalty has become a costly and unaffordable endeavor. Senate Bill 490, which as you know proposes repealing the death penalty in favor of life without parole sentences, would save the state money it desperately needs.

Please support California's economy, and stop excessive spending on sentences that are only rarely carried out, by passing Senate Bill 490.
