Stuffed mushrooms make a great appetizer or even main dish. And they’re perfect for the holiday table, too! Try these tasty ways to stuff a mushroom.

When you picturestuffed mushrooms, youmight seea stuffing that’s packed with bacon or ground beef, then covered in cheese, but animal products aren’t the end-all when it comes to ways to stuff a mushroom. There are lots of delicious plant-based stuffed mushroom recipes out there! These are some of my favorite vegan stuffed mushroom recipes.

Choosing a Mushroom for Stuffing

Before we get into the ways to stuff a mushroom, we should talk a little bit about how to choose the right mushroom for stuffing.

Most recipes will specify themushroom type – like portabella or button – that you need, but you’ll sometimessee recipes just call for “stuffing mushrooms.” This is kind of vague, but don’t let it intimidate you! A stuffing mushroom justmeans a mushroom with a cap that’s around two inches wide and a stem that pops out of the cap, leaving an opening.

Basically, you just want to make sure that when you pop the stem off, there’s enough space to hold your stuffing. Button mushrooms, cremini mushrooms, and baby portabellas are allgreat stuffing mushrooms.
