Sexy nurse costumes and funny politician masks aside, Halloween is a time to revel in all that is drop-dead scary. Some of us may shy away from gore and screaming scary antics throughout the year, but come October 31st, we’re first in line at the grown-up haunted house just for the seasonal thrill of jumping out of our boots. Or snuggled up at home, door locks double- and triple-checked, watching movies that promise to inspire a few heart-jarring nightmares in the nights ahead.
With that in mind, here is a selection of ten films that are really, super scary. It’s hard to say what qualifies as the scariest–some find the supernatural more frightening than realism, for others an escaped psycho trumps a vampire any day. Whatever keeps you up at night, we are sure you’ll find something here. And when you’ve viewed our selection, leave a comment about what movie scares the living daylights out of you.
The Others (2001) Director: Alejandro Amenábar. Otherworldly Nicole Kidman thinks her creepy, creepy house is haunted. Hmmm, what’s going on here? Subtle, surprising, and sooooo eerie. Boo.

+ add your ownHorror movies never scare me but I do find them entertaining and creepy.
Well, I do get scared if I watch them with the lights off in the middle of the night when nobody else is in the house and need to go to another room to get something. The trip feels much longer than it actually is since I am constantly looking over my shoulder and making sure I don't look out a window or in a mirror.
JAWS PERIOD!!! Saw it at the Drivein with my girlfriend and never went swimming in the Ocean here in San Diego AGAIN!!! Only up to my ankles!!!
I love all.thanks.
The Others: Spooky and rather scary.
The Thing: Haven't watched it yet.
Silence Of The Lambs: Scary? More like boring.
Nosferatu: Never watched it.
The Shining: Insane and creepy masterpiece.
Let The Right One In: Watched one minute of it, seemed awful.
Nightmare On Elm Street: Will never watch it.
Ju-on - The Grudge: Japanese horror movies are not scary.
Alien: Scary? If you say so.
Young Frankestein: Epic and hysterically funny.
There are dozens of movies that are scarier than the ones listed here.
There is a difference between scary/spooky and slasher. There should be separate categories. Although Young Frankenstein is a great movie!
I saw most of these movies, and they all scared me--but in a good way--I watch scary movies to get scared, of course. Nigntmare onElm Street was one I really didn't enjoy, I don't know why.
Young Frankenstein is one of my favorite movies I get a good laugh out of watching it
I love them all..............
The Thing... but I also like the original The Haunting and Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead (both the Romero originals).
The original " The Haunting,' with Julie Harris, is one of the most effective psychological horror movies of all time! Superb acting, filming, and just the right touch of the macabre, bring this wonderful film from the 60's to it's chilling conclusion. A must see for any horror enthusiast...it's number one on my list of movies that scare, and chill me to the bone. Be sure to watch it alone, in the dark, with all the lights turn out. Yikes!
