10 Reasons People Don’t Cleanse (And Why They Should!)

10 Reasons People Don’t Cleanse (And Why They Should!)

My inbox has been jammed and my phone has been ringing off the hook since my green juice cleanse teacher Tricia Barrett and I officially launched the Pink & Green Detox Cleanse yesterday. (Check out what I知 talking about here).

I知 hearing the same message over and over from many of you, so I figure it warrants a blog post.

The gist of the message I知 hearing is 的 know I should cleanse and I want to cleanse, but I知 scared. Why are people scared? Here痴 what you池e telling me. And here are my answers.

10 Reasons People Don稚 Cleanse

的知 afraid of feeling deprived.

Ooh – I feel this one. After twelve years of deprivation during my medical education, I was DONE feeling deprived. When I approached my first cleanse, this was a huge fear of mine. I felt like I deserved to enjoy my simple pleasures, even if they were toxic to my body. I didn稚 want to judge myself for them. I just wanted to relish in the pleasure of them. Deprivation sounded traumatic, even if it was good for me.

I realized that deprivation is a state of mind. But it wasn稚 until I realized how much I genuinely liked the taste of everything you consume when you池e cleansing that I was able to jump on board. Green pond scum? Ick. But when I tasted it, it tasted like the cucumber water at my favorite spa. And the mineral broth was this yummy, savory, warm cuppa delish. When I started looking at my cleanse as a self-care treat, rather than an exercise in self-punishment, it changed everything.

的知 too busy. Cleansing is going to burden my already maxed-out lifestyle.

The way we’ve developed this cleanse, you’ll likely be less burdened than when you’re not cleansing. We’ve set this up to be a working person’s cleanse, and most of the prep work can be done ahead of time. If you’re really busy, you can even buy everything you’ll need premade. So don’t worry. We promise you’ll have time.

的致e heard people get detox symptoms. Why would I want to intentionally feel bad?

While it’s true that some people do get detox symptoms, we’ve developed the cleanse to keep these symptoms to a bare minimum. And remember, you’ll be FULLY supported. So if you do get detox symptoms, Tricia and I will be there to help you. Also, if you’re getting detox symptoms, keep in mind that this is a sign that you REALLY needed to cleanse. The alternative – keeping all those toxins inside – isn’t pretty.

的知 afraid of giving up my dirty little habit, even for 21 days. I really love my [ciggies/ booze/ donuts/ caffeine/ Vicodin/ pot.]

While it痴 optimal to get off all toxins during a cleanse, Tricia and I would rather have you cleanse while continuing your dirty little habit than not cleanse at all. In fact, as sacrilegious as it might seem for a raw foods expert to do so, Tricia used to deliver cleanse bags with American Spirit cigarettes to those who just couldn稚 give up their cigarettes. Tricia even cleansed the Grateful Dead!

If fear of breaking a habit is keeping you from cleansing, why not give yourself permission to continue your habit this time around – with the goal that by the time you do your next cleanse, you値l have cut back or quit? If you must, eat that donut, have that drink, slurp down that coffee, smoke that pot. I promise we won稚 judge you.

Tricia even delivered green juice to people who paid her thousands of dollars and never even drank the juice. When she asked if she should stop delivering it every day, they壇 say 哲o, you池e delivering HOPE. Every day, I think maybe today is the day I知 going to stop hurting myself with this [cigarette/ booze/ donut/ Vicodin/ pot.]

Cleansing is HOPE. Once you know what you need to do, you can choose to do it whenever you池e ready.

摘ven if I do this for 21 days, I知 not interested in giving up my bad habits for good or becoming a raw vegan. I just want to be honest about that up front.

The cleanse is simply a reset button. It痴 an opportunity to make permanent change if you池e inspired to do so, but it痴 certainly not a requirement. I know a group of party girls who cleanse every 3 months. For 21 days, they池e all about clean living and green juicing, and in between cleanses, they池e drinking five martinis a night. Again, no judgment. These women are much better off doing what they池e doing than if they were only partying every night.

的t痴 too expensive.

When you add the cost of the cleanse program to the cost of the groceries, it痴 still much less than most people spend on food and drinks for 21 days. In fact, my husband calculated that when we cleanse we spend hundreds of dollars less than when we we池e not cleansing because we池e not eating out, we池e not buying expensive food items, and we池e not drinking any alcohol. You don稚 need to buy any expensive equipment for this cleanse, and if you track all of your expenses, I値l bet you値l find you actually save hundreds of dollars over the course of the 21 days.

的t痴 not the right time – I知 scheduled to go to [a wedding/ my birthday/ a wine festival.]

Yes, it痴 easier to cleanse when you池e not tempted by other people eating rich, heavy food or drinking alcohol. But you can still go to a wedding or eat out with your friends while you池e cleansing. Just downgrade to one of the gentler cleanse options and have salad, cooked veggies, and whole grains. Then switch back to the cleanse you were on previously the next day. It痴 an excellent exercise in noticing how food and alcohol play into your social life.

的 can稚 skip meals. I always get lightheaded.

Most of the time, people who get lightheaded when they skip meals are setting their bodies up for a crash. On the Standard American Diet, you start your day with coffee and something sweet, like a pastry, which revs you up and spikes up your insulin. Then, around lunchtime (or even before), your blood sugar crashes and you feel jittery, dizzy, and lightheaded. If you skip lunch at that point, you may even pass out because your blood glucose levels have bottomed out. So you eat a sandwich or pasta, your insulin levels spike back up, and by 3pm, you池e having another slump.

But the cleanse is designed to stabilize your blood sugar throughout the day so you don稚 experience any of these peaks and valleys.

I personally used to be very sensitive to blood sugar fluctuations and was very afraid of this when I first cleansed. But I found that, not only did I not get dizzy and lightheaded. I actually lost the cravings I used to feel for sweets, salty snacks, or carbs. If you do get lightheaded, don稚 worry.

Remember, you won稚 be skipping meals. You値l be feeding your body glorious nutrition throughout the cleanse in easily assimilated form, which is the complete opposite of fasting. Believe it or not, I am never hungry when I cleanse. In fact, I have to force myself to eat my soup for dinner so my blood sugar will stay stable throughout the night.

And if, for some reason, you do get lightheaded, Tricia and I will be there to help you troubleshoot. Nothing to fear!

的 can稚 cleanse because I have to be at peak performance.

I also had this fear before my first cleanse. After all, I知 a doctor and I was expected to see patients! But keep in mind that you値l likely feel great during your pre-cleanse when you池e eating a healthy three meals per day. And you値l feel awesome by your post-cleanse week. The only week you may feel a little sluggish is the week of the actual cleanse.

In my experience, day 2 and 3 are the days I feel the slowest. Day 1 is always surprisingly easy for me, and by day 4, I feel like a million bucks. So schedule those two days lightly. Don稚 plan to be on stage in front of 3,000 people on Day 2 and 3 of the second week.

Now that I cleanse regularly, I don稚 have to modify my schedule at all. Because I have less to detox, I can work a full schedule, take a 10 mile hike, and feel full of energy. Although this cleanse is designed to be a cleanse you can do while working, you might enjoy your cleanse more if you keep your schedule a bit lighter during the actual cleanse week.

“I知 gonna try & fail, and then I値l prove that I知 not trustworthy.”

This one was a big one for me. As a physician, I was terrified that I wouldn稚 be able to follow through, and then I壇 feel like even more of a hypocrite. And my friends and colleagues (not to mention myself) would all find out what a fraud I was.

But don稚 fear, my dear. I did it, and so can you. This cleanse is designed so that anyone with a genuine desire to complete this cleanse will succeed. You will not be alone. If you find yourself slipping, ask for help. If you cheat, keep cleansing while you cheat – and love and forgive yourself in the process. This is not about doing a perfect cleanse. It痴 about taking one step towards a more healthy body so you can take a giant step towards a more healthy life.

And when you complete the cleanse – if you really want to, you will, however that looks for you – you値l have given yourself a HUGE gift, the gift of demonstrating to yourself that you ARE trustworthy, that you CAN follow through, and that you deserve to treat your body like the temple you know it is, even if you don稚 cleanse 菟erfectly.

Are You Ready To Get On Board?

If you池e ready, we池e here to help. Make the commitment to do what you KNOW is right for your body, even if it sounds hard. Don稚 procrastinate, do it now while it痴 still fresh in your mind. We池e here pulling for you and can稚 wait to support you!

I agree with those that are disappointed by the fact that this seem to be a thinly disguised advertisement. I was offended by that fact.

Sorry, in one sentence, that was supposed to read "Activistic", not atavistic.

I've been reading Dr. Rankin's articles here for about 4 yrs. A lot of you seem to think that she's just hawking her product. I don't think so.
I find that some of her articles are just too New-Age to be credible in the real world. I find some of her articles heartfelt and make me feel like she's concerned for me simply as a fellow human being. I find some of her articles to be well researched and include information that I find relevant to my life & health.

I find her to be atavistic, but this feels more to me like concern. She's done the research and she truly believes in her product. Taking the body of her work here into consideration, I think she's only saying that she makes it available. The price is not objectionable for what it is.

You could read and gather and do all the research and find all the supplements, and I'm sure when you take the time & $$ to do that, you'll find the price justified.

For the record, I've never cleansed, but at my age, I'm beginning to feel like I ought to at least once as a maintenance thing. I don't know Lisa, never spoke with her or contacted her, not her to me. I'd just like to consider myself a fair-minded reader and don't like to see someone like her maligned by some of the comments.

I worked for a gastroenterolgist for years. Also let me state that I think western medicine has few answers. However, our digestive systems are wonderful little factories that do just what they are supposed to do. When you do a cleanse you ruin the natural distribution of flora and fauna. One should never "do" a cleanse, but we should always be aware of a good diet with lots of ORGANIC fruits and vegetables. If you want to do anything for your digestive system, that is what you should do, but not a cleanse.
